Last week we considered that there were things that Timothy could do to be more effective, but there was a specific thing that Timothy must do - follow the pattern of sound words given to him by Paul. Today, we continue our study in this theme.

In light of the persecution from the Roman Empire and the pressure from conflict within the church, some would counsel Timothy to spend more time expressing the love of God through providing for the material needs of people. I can almost hear it: ”Back off being narrow-minded when it comes to who God is and focus on simply being the love of God to people.” Others would urge Timothy to listen more...

Last week, we saw how Paul sought to encourage Timothy by aiming at his identity. Today, Paul will seek to shape Timothy's attitude. Timothy was being intimidated by strong personalities and overwhelmed by difficult circumstances. Timothy needed courage. Where do you get courage? How do you increase boldness? Today, we will find out.

There is a vast chasm between how people want to be known and who they actually are. We crave to be more because we realize our weaknesses and inconsistencies. Christ knows this and provides His grace so that a work of transformation can occur through resources that He has provided. We will discover today that Timothy needed to know this as much as we do today.

Endings have a way of motivating us. Whether it be those final moments of the game or putting the final touches on the presentation, endings bring focus, attention to detail, and an urgency to act before time runs out. Paul feels this urgency as he writes to Timothy in this second letter. Today, we will consider the vantage point of both men as we venture into 2 Timothy.

The prayer of Jesus in John 17 gives us a fascinating insight into how Jesus defined life itself. What was it that Jesus was seeking to accomplish to live as He did, to suffer and die as He did? When we discover this, it will change how we view living today.

How do we live in a world that is increasingly hostile to Christians and the Gospel? In the story of Noah, we encounter a man who lived out his faith under incredibly difficult circumstances because the God he served is an incredible God. That God is also our God, and he upholds his people today just as he did in the days of Noah empowering us to live lives of righteousness, obedience and faith.

Today we come to a close in our study of Paul’s letter known as 1 Timothy. Paul’s role is like that of a flight instructor, sharing important information and experience with his young student as he learns to fly. With all of this in mind, Paul ends his letter to Timothy with a heart-felt post script. It’s a short, yet profound message from a loving mentor to his beloved student.

Every moment of every day, we all cultivate a mindset that either reminds us to trust God or defaults to trust in ourselves. Today, we will see how to enable a “Big God” mentality that fosters a God-centered outlook in life.

Focus in life is getting harder to achieve in today’s world. The ability to discern what is valuable among the assortment of choices and distractions has never been more challenging. Today, Paul gives Timothy three crucial areas that bring crystal clear focus to his life.

We continue to see how Jesus brings change in how we view life and in how we see others. Paul is helping Timothy see this and help the disciples at Ephesus walk in this reality as well. Thanks for joining us for this timely study.

Today, we continue to examine how following Jesus will necessarily change how we view life and see others. The disciples at Ephesus were no different, although their circumstances in life were very different from today.

The Fall of Adam and Eve affected all relationships – from nation to nation and person to person. Today, we will consider how following Jesus was to reorient the lives of Christians in Ephesus almost 2000 years ago and our lives today.

The character and quality of church leadership is fundamental to being effective in the health of any church. Therefore, Paul revisits this subject in an effort to make sure Timothy leads in clarity and with competency.

It doesn’t matter what the organization or entity, the character and quality of the leadership will dictate both the pace and effectiveness of that group. The same is true of the church and why Paul revisits the subject of leadership.

It is a powerful and profound truth that how a church community responds to others’ needs will reveal where its allegiance lies, either to its aspirations or the mission of Christ.

As we have seen, Paul equates the church as being a type of family in which roles are to be played and responsibilities are to be carried out. What happens when a woman is older and has no family? How do we care well in a difficult circumstance?

Families foster love, discipline, togetherness, etc., and, therefore, they form our self-identity. Similarly, the church fosters our identity as the family of God. Today, we will continue to see how spiritual formation happens in Church.

The church in Ephesus was a mess. It was no longer distinct from the world and Paul was encouraging Timothy to guide it back to its first love, Jesus. In so doing, it would stand apart from the world and draw attention to the beauty of Christ.

Our passage today conveys a warning, the chilling reality that some who appear to be walking with Christ will turn away from the faith in the future. Timothy needed to remember this and so do we.
