Getting Through This with Tom and Scott

Stamp collecting has become very popular since the pandemic began, and Tom and Scott take their time machine back to their childhood when they collected large octagonal stamps from Togo, as well as mint stamps from the US.

Tom and Scott talk about the Eames chair and the LaZboy recliner, and how these two iconic seating devices, can help us bridge the divide, and bring people together.

Tom watches 12 hours of cable news and reads three newspapers every day. Scott is also a news junkie but limits his consumption to the NBC Nightly News and reading the print edition of the New York Times. Which is more normal in The New Normal?

Tom gives himself a haircut and we both get goosebumps hearing his thrilling story. Scott prefers to wait until barber shops reopen in Brooklyn in about three weeks, because these days, the only time he needs his hair to look good is on the way to get a haircut.

Two months ago, Tom asked why the fashion industry wasn’t making stylish face masks.. Now it’s a booming industry which just introduced the trikini, a matching bikini and mask. We also discuss how to pronounce this brand new term.

Scott got bumped from his Newsmax appearance today. Was it jack booted thugs trying to stifle opposing points of view? Or were they just running long and he’ll be on again next week. Plus, we get nostalgic for the simpler days when we only had to contend with a pandemic.

Tom and Scott are news junkies, but they like to escape from our current reality sometimes,too. Tom’s newfound appreciation for his sleekly designed time machine, AKA IPad, takes him back to 1970 for such memorable moments as Santana live at Tanglewood, courtesy of YouTube.

Tom’s barber is open for business in Los Angeles, but despite their fun conversations, Tom is uneasy about going back. Scott will have to wait at least another three weeks to get a haircut in New York, and his hair now looks the way it did in his 1976 college graduation photo.

We time travel to the 1964 World’s Fair to trace the evolution of the primitive and exorbitantly expensive black and white Picture Phone of 1964 to the basically free but annoying to some, Zoom of today.

Since Tom and Scott are still following stay at home orders in LA and Brooklyn, they think now would be the best time for elective surgery since they could recover at home when they have to stay home anyway. And they imagine a world where the scariest thing we had to worry about was poison ivy.

Why would anyone risk their life and the lives of others by practically being on top of each other at a water park? If you’re going to take a risk, at least see something memorable like an opera at The Met or a Broadway show. Thankfully theater and opera houses are closed until they are safe again, which makes them better and smarter than water parks.

Sometimes the best way of getting through this sad time, is to be thankful for the bad things that aren’t happening. Nobody is forcing you to walk on stilts, or to go on a ski lift, which is particularly terrifying to Tom and Scott.

Tom and Scott welcome audio only communication, as Scott’s hair approaches a length not seen since 1976. And while Tom yearns to stick his neck out with confidence, he balks at attempting cosmetic surgery on himself.

It’s the unofficial start of summer, and even in these times, we should look for ways to have fun this weekend, even though Memorial Day is not the happiest name for a celebratory holiday.

Is slow, somber piano music what we need in commercials during these challenging times? And we discuss the euphemisms for the pandemic, like “in these challenging times”, and suggest even more apropos ones. And more euphemistic euphemisms too.

On our gala 50th episode, we put on our metaphorical tuxedo and patent leather shoes, and look back at where we’ve been, and where we are now, since we began this podcast 50 days ago. We’re still essential workers working from home. And since neither of us had a high school prom, we thought it would be fitting to talk about that as well as virtual proms, too.
