The Bible calls us to be completely humble before God and in that humility to serve others. But that does not mean we cannot stand confidently for righteousness and truth! Let us not use humility as a cover for our fear.

One of the categories of sin in 1 John 3:16 is "the boastful pride of life." It is easier than we think to be guilty of pride. Humility is an absolute necessity for salvation. May we humble ourselves before God, so that He may exalt us.

Happy are those that mourn? If your right eye makes you sin, pluck it out? Love your enemies? Don't store up treasures on earth? Don't worry about tomorrow? The way of the kingdom of God is not easy but it leads to life. Few find that way. Have you?

We worry when we focus too much on self instead of God. But we also tend to focus too much on the sins of others, making us judgmental.

Do you really trust your Father? Then stop worrying!

Do you trust what you can see? Or do you trust what you don't see?

Jesus calls us to set our hearts on treasure that is stored up for us in heaven. Those eternal treasures will be wonderful beyond our imagination, but we also should remember the rewards that we have in this life as we follow Jesus.

Before three lessons on prayer, we focused on Jesus' teaching that when your heart is right and you do right, then your Father will reward you. Today, we return to that topic and discuss the rewards.

As we speak with reverence to our loving Father, give matters of the kingdom first importance. Physical needs should be requested but with faith that the Lord will provide our needs. And what we truly need is forgiveness and deliverance...

Jesus introduced His model prayer with the assumption that you pray when you need something. Is there anything we need more than something to eat?

We have a Father who wants us to come to Him with our needs. So pray!

When we make Jesus our King and live according to His ways with all heart, then we will receive a reward from our Father in heaven!

Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but encourages His disciples to have a righteousness that "surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees." He wants us to go deeper. He wants us to be like our heavenly Father.

In Matthew 5:3-14, Jesus portrays the kingdom of God as composed of those who have the spirit of God and follow the Messiah even when persecuted. Then in verse 17 He makes clear that is the one who will fulfill everything in the Old Testament.

The kingdom of God is at hand and the humble souls who become a part of that kingdom will be persecuted because of Jesus (Mt. 5:1-12). But those happy souls will be effective even in the face of persecution.

In the "Beattitudes," Jesus announced the arrival of the kingdom of God, and by deduction that He was the Messiah. But instead of language describing an attack on Rome, He announced that His followers would be attacked. This would be a different sort of kingdom.

This begins a series from Jesus' sermon on the mount. Before we learn how we should fill our lives according to what He said, let us learn from what He did.

What does it mean to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus? It means to empty yourself of self and then fill that void with Jesus.
