Freeze Frame: “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” (PG-13), “The Equalizer 2” (R) 20.07.2018 2:00
Audiences say they want originality, but do they actually prefer familiarity? If the latter is true, then “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” should catch the fancy of audiences who made the original 2008 Abba musical a box office hit. All of the original cast members are back, joined by a cadre of actors who portray the characters in their earlier years. The flimsy-dual timeline plot doesn’t make sense...
Freeze Frame: “Skyscraper” (PG-13), “Sorry to Bother You” (R), “Leave No Trace” (PG), “Three Identical Strangers” (PG-13) 12.07.2018 2:00
“Die Hard” meets “The Towering Inferno” in “Skyscraper,” Duane “The Rock” Johnson’s third action/adventure special effects extravaganza in the past seven months. Johnson plays a security expert whose family is trapped above the fire line when the world’s tallest building in Hong Kong is torched by a crime syndicate. Can he save his loved ones while battling the elements, the bad guys and the cops?...
Freeze Frame: “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (PG-13), “Boundaries” (R) 06.07.2018 1:59
In the Marvel Universe, we’ve recently been hit with the dark tragedy of “Avengers: Infinity War” and the comic superhero parody, “Deadpool 2.” In tone, the latest Marvel entry, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” falls somewhere in between. Paul Rudd is back in a light-hearted thriller that has Ant-Man joining forces with The Wasp, played by Evangeline Lilly, in an attempt to save her mother from entrapment i...
Freeze Frame: “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” (R), “Uncle Drew” (PG-13), “Mountain” (PG) 28.06.2018 2:00
“Sicario: Day of the Soldado” is a sequel to the acclaimed drug war drama from 2015. The follow up is equally grim and cynical, this time adding the element of human trafficking along the southern border to the mix. James Brolin’s amoral federal agent recruits the reluctant Benicio Del Toro to stage a Mexican kidnapping aimed at starting a war between cartels. The screenplay crackles with sharp di...
Freeze Frame: “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (PG-13), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (PG-13), “American Animals” (R) 22.06.2018 2:00
If you haven’t witnessed the marketing blitz for “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” I hope you get your TV, radio and internet service back soon. The fifth film in the popular series should take in a monstrous haul at the box office but doesn’t quite live up to the quality of the last outing. Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and the special effects magicians all return to save the resurrected dinos...
Freeze Frame: “Superfly” (R), “Hearts Beat Loud” (PG-13), “Tag” (R) 14.06.2018 2:00
The remake of the classic 70s blaxploitation flick “Superfly” replaces gritty with glossy. Trevor Jackson plays an ultra-smooth Atlanta drug dealer who tries to arrange one last big score and get out of the game. This violent crime drama is slick and competently made but adds nothing new or notable and looks more like a music video than a movie. The score has a few snippets of Curtis Mayfield’s gr...
Freeze Frame: “Ocean’s 8” (PG-13), “Hotel Artemis” (R), “First Reformed” (R) 08.06.2018 2:01
Flip the script, make the con men con women, but keep the cheeky feel. That seems to be the thought process behind the comic heist spin-off, "Ocean's Eight." Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and a bevy of talented actresses fill the roles but aren't really challenged by the material. Still, they seem to be having fun. Anne Hathaway, doing something of a self-parody as a vacuous actress, has the only...
Freeze Frame: “Adrift” (PG-13), “The Rider” (R) 02.06.2018 1:58
If you’re planning a boat trip any time soon, you may not want to see “Adrift,” a harrowing true story. Shailene Woodley plays Tami Oldham, a young woman whose sailboat was severely damaged by a storm when she and her boyfriend, played by Sam Claflin, were attempting a trans-Atlantic trip. With little hope of survival, she had to muster some nearly superhuman determination to save herself and her...
Freeze Frame: “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” (PG-13) “Little Pink House” (Not rated) 24.05.2018 1:59
If there is a litmus test for the new Star Wars entry “Solo,” it lies in one’s perception of actor Alden Ehrenreich who takes on the role of the young Han Solo, once embodied by the one-and-only Harrison Ford. Can this young upstart capture the swagger, arrogance and sense of humor that Ford brought to the part? For my money, I say, “Yes.” Directed -at least in part- by Oscar-winner Ron Howard, “S...
Freeze Frame: “Deadpool 2” (R), “Book Club” (PG-13), “Anything” (R), “Disobedience” (R), “Let the Sunshine In” (R) 23.05.2018 2:00
Shamelessly raunchy, unapologetically profane and completely irreverent, Marvel’s R-rated 2016 superhero parody “Deadpool” became a surprise box office smash. The equally obscene sequel doesn’t quite match it, but with a zippy pace, well-staged action and Ryan Reynolds’ cheeky performance, “Deadpool 2” comes close. Marvelites will relish the movie’s self-referential humor, cocky attitude and energ...
Freeze Frame: “Life of the Party” (PG-13), “Breaking In” (PG-13), “The House of Tomorrow” (NR), “RBG” (PG) 11.05.2018 1:58
Can Melissa McCarthy breathe life into a tired comedy formula? Well, she gives it the old college try in “Life of the Party.” When dumped by her husband, McCarthy decides to go back to college, the same school her daughter attends. McCarthy and her director husband Ben Falcone have no one to blame but themselves for the derivative script, but McCarthy nearly saves the soiree by the sheer force of...
Freeze Frame: “Tully” (R), “Itzhak” (Not rated) 04.05.2018 1:57
Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is reunited with Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron in "Tully," an offbeat comic drama about, of all things, postpartum depression. Theron plays a woman who delivers her third child. Because of exhaustion, she agrees to let her wealthy brother pay for a night nanny, played by Mackenzie Davis. The plot focuses on the relationship that develops between these...
“Avengers: Infinity War” (PG-13), “The Endless” 26.04.2018 2:00
If "more" equals "better," then "Avengers: Infinity War" is everything a Marvel fanboy could hope for. However, in spite of some impressive scenes and spirited individual performances, "Avengers: Infinity War" is just what you'd expect from a $300 million, 2 hour and 40 minute superhero extravaganza. No more, no less. To call it busy and over-packed with characters would be an understatement. On t...
Freeze Frame: “I Feel Pretty” (PG-13), “Super Troopers 2 (R),” “Lean on Pete” (R) 19.04.2018 2:00
Amy Schumer takes on the issue of body image in the likable comic fantasy, “I Feel Pretty.” She plays an insecure woman who falls and bumps her head and comes to believe that she’s a raging beauty. Although the screenwriters’ template is pretty obvious, Schumer gives a shrewd performance proving she has real acting chops. It’s no accident that the stoner comedy sequel “Super Troopers 2” is being...
Freeze Frame: “Rampage” (PG-13), “Truth or Dare” (PG-13), “Beirut” (R) 19.04.2018 1:58
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a knack for making a silk purse out of a cinematic sow’s ear. Can he do the same for the cursed video game genre? Maybe so. In “Rampage,” based on the Midway arcade game, Johnson plays a primatologist who has to figure out what to do when a genetic experiment goes wrong and his favorite albino gorilla grows to Kong size. The ape and a giant mutated wolf and alligator...
FREEZE FRAME: “Ready Player One” (PG-13), “Loveless” (R) 29.03.2018 2:00
There probably isn’t a director better suited to adapting Ernest Cline’s pop novel “Ready Player One” for the big screen than Steven Spielberg. It’s the sort of visual-heavy sci-fi extravaganza that a lesser filmmaker like Michael Bay would have made a complete mess of. Tye Sheridan stars as a kid who, in the dystopian future, plays a virtual reality game in an attempt to save mankind from an evil...
FREEZE FRAME: “Tomb Raider” (PG-13), “Love, Simon” (PG-13), “7 Days in Entebbe” (PG-13) 17.03.2018 1:53
One day, someone will make a truly good movie based on a video game. We’re still waiting. Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander is the latest to log in for a paycheck. “Tomb Raider” reboots the old Angelina Jolie franchise and the results are loud, busy and mind numbing. The so-so special effects are a distraction and it lacks the humor that makes its obvious inspiration, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,...
Freeze Frame: “A Wrinkle in Time,” “A Fantastic Woman,” “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” 08.03.2018 2:00
“A Wrinkle in Time,” the classic, 1962 award-winning science fantasy novel has finally made it to the big screen. Director Ava DuVernay’s $103 million adaptation is colorful, well meaning and, ultimately, bland. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling play the astral travelers who help a troubled 13-year-old, played by Storm Reid, search for her astrophysicist father who’s being held by an...
Freeze Frame: “Red Sparrow” (R) 08.03.2018 2:00
Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has proven that she’s got the acting chops and personal charisma to elevate so-so material. That ability is sorely needed in the new suspense thriller, “Red Sparrow,” based on the novel by Jason Matthews. Lawrence plays Dominika, a Bolshoi Ballet artist who suffers a career-ending injury. Her uncle, a Russian Intelligence agent, recruits her to become a sp...
FREEZE FRAME: “Game Night” (R) 24.02.2018 2:00
Pulling off a screwball comedy is as difficult as pulling out the last block in Jenga. There’s always a good chance the whole thing will come toppling down. The goofy farce “Game Night” somehow remains standing even though it’s not the most stable of structures. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams lead a gifted cast in the wacky story of a husband and wife who are very active gamers. They meet weekly...
Freeze Frame: “Black Panther” (PG-13), “Early Man” (PG), “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” (R) 15.02.2018 1:58
Marvel’s superhero “Black Panther” finally gets his proper feature-length movie introduction and it’s a rousing, involving adventure. The fact that most of the folks in front of and behind the camera are black makes it all the more compelling. Chawick Boseman plays the king of a mysterious, highly advanced African nation who must rise to the occasion and save his country, and the world, from a riv...
FREEZE FRAME: “Fifty Shades Freed” (R), “Oscar Shorts” (not rated), “Happy End” (R) 08.02.2018 1:59
The final chapter in the big screen adaptation of E.L. James’ kinky S&M bestseller “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy finally hits theaters this week. Like its predecessors, “Fifty Shades Freed” isn’t bad enough to be campy fun and is about as erotic as a cold shower. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are back in this absurd wish-fulfillment fantasy that’s just a gaudy soap opera dressed up with sna...
FREEZE FRAME: “Black History Month” movie suggestions 01.02.2018 2:00
February is “Black History Month,” and people have asked me to put together a list of movie suggestions to commemorate the annual observance. So, here are some films that are, I believe, apt viewing choices. “12 Years a Slave” won the Best Picture Oscar for 2013. Inspired by a true story, it tells the harrowing tale of a free man, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was captured and sent into slaver...
FREEZE FRAME: “Hostiles” (R), “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” (PG-13) 25.01.2018 1:59
The clichés and stereotypes that populate most Westerns are upended in “Hostiles,” a brutal, challenging and beautifully filmed drama. Christian Bale leads a terrific cast in the story of a war weary Army captain who, in the late 1800s, reluctantly escorts a group of Cheyenne prisoners on a torturous journey from New Mexico to Wyoming. Wes Studie plays a dying Cheyenne war chief and Rosamund Pike...
FREEZE FRAME: “12 Strong” (R), “Phantom Thread” (R), “Call Me by Your Name” (R), “Small Town Crime” (R) 18.01.2018 1:59
Chris Hemsworth moves from superhero to war hero in“12 Strong,” a tale inspired by the true story of the Green Beret soldiers who were the first sent into action in Afghanistan after 9/11. Historians may quibble about the accuracy of the proceedings and some may find this standard action flick a bit jingoistic, but it’s a suitable tribute to those brave men who willingly put themselves in harm’s w...
