We normally think of St. John the Baptist as somber and serious. However, there are good reasons to see him as joyful. Father examines these reasons and sees how they apply to our lives.

As the season of Advent begins, there is no better way to prepare ourselves for Christmas that by making a good confession. However, many people struggle with fear and shame and stay away from confession. Father looks at the phenomenon of shame and encourages us to overcome it to receive the Lord's mercy this Advent.

Notice in this Sunday's gospel that Jesus is judging the nations. In biblical parlance the "nations" mean the gentiles, those who are not part of God's chosen people. Recognizing this distinction, Father Sibley looks at what our attitude towards non-Christians ought to be.

Instead of looking at what we should repay to Caesar, in this homily, Father looks at what we should repay to God. But more that what we owe God, but how our concept of who God is and our relationship to him, impacts how we live our faith.

hy would someone turn down an invitation to attend a New Orleans Saints game? There are numerous possible reasons, but the most fundamental is that they are not a Saints fan. Father looks at this reality in relationship to the invitation the Father gives to us to attend Holy Mass on Sunday and our identity as Catholics.

St. Paul tells us to have "no anxiety at all" in today's second reading. This seems impossible in our world today so filled with news of violence, natural disasters, and political turmoil. Building on the homilies from the past two weeks, Fr. Sibley offers a message of hope. Instead of letting shame and guilt cripple you spiritually, he urges humility and The Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux as a means of clinging to Christ.

The Pareto Principle is better known as the 80/20 rule - 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. This is especially true in the Church. Father looks at today's gospel - the parable of the workers - through the Pareto Principle and gives suggestions on how the 80% in the Church can become part of the 20%.

In 1999, I took a pilgrimage to Naples, Italy for the Feast of St. Januarius in hopes of witnessing the blood miracle. In this homily I tell two stories from that trip - one how St. Januarius saved me from choking on a cheese ball and the other about the miracle St. Januarius could not work.

"Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight." (Sirach 27:30) It might be anger. It might be gluttony. It might be lust. What sin are we hugging tight" and refusing to let go of and give to Christ? Why did we find it so hard to let go of these sins? What are the impacts of hugging these sins tight?
