First Do No Harm

Leisure EN ↓ 221 episodes

#FDNHPodcast is an in depth discussion with equestrian trainers and professionals dedicated to making horse training happen for the horse not to the horse. We discuss how to reduce harm in our horses training environment and how to support our horses mental, emotional and physical well being so that we have horses that enjoy learning and ask to be ridden. Each episode we discuss the different influences equestrians can have and how we can improve our horses overall athleticism, soundness of mind and body and emotional fortitude whilst strengthening and deepening our relationship.

Do you have to be the boss? 19.04.2023

Often as horse riders and trainers when we come across a problem we can be told to just show them who's boss and make the horse do it, but is that really how we fix these issues? It doesn't factor in why the horse is saying no and assuming all no's are a challenge to our authority. And going even deeper, that challenging our authority is a bad thing. It doesn't factor in if the no is stemming from...

Being a confident rider isn't all its cracked up to be 22.02.2023

There have been a few times in my riding career where I've started to think wow I'm actually starting to get good at this. Only to be firmly put back in my place by a or many horses. Confidence in our ability to get our horses to do what we want results in power over, submission based training and rules out the potential for our horse to have choice and consent what is happening to them. When we a...

Butekyo breathing and nervous system regulation with Mim Biem 15.02.2023

July 2022 I went through the Buteyko breathing practitioner training to add a tool to my tool kit when working with the horses and my students. I didn't expect to be so thoroughly impressed by how easily it taps in to our nervous system, although I shouldn't have been surprised with how intimately our breath and nervous system are connected. Mim has been kind enough to offer a quick 3 minute exerc...

Pressure/Release was simultaneously one of the worst and best lessons I learnt 08.02.2023

Is frustration getting in the way of your training goals? 25.01.2023

In this episode I'm going to dig in to one of my many failings - as per normal, my emotional agility for frustration.  Frustration is a biologically, hard-wired response, and any time you have yourself and your horse set a goal and a time frame it is inevitable that you will be at the mercy of frustration.  I've been there, trust me. In this episode I'm going to share with you some ways...
