We work endlessly trying to provide for our own needs because we fail to recognize God as the provider who has provided everything. God is our provider who loves us and provides for all our needs, the most important being fellowship with himself.

We don’t realize the blessing of God’s presence nor the means of how to secure it, so we live anemic, powerless, sin-filled lives when we should have power, influence, and abundance. Christ’s blood covers over our sin on the mercy seat so God’s holy presence can empower us to live in all the fullness of God’s blessings.

We tend to say “No, Lord” to the things we don’t want to do without realizing that’s it’s impossible to say “No, Lord” without hypocrisy. Either He’s Lord and we say “yes,” or we say “no” proving He’s not our Lord. God is moving and calling us into His mighty work. Christ, through his death, burial and resurrection, earned the right to be called our Lord. We must say “Yes, Lord” to him!

We tend to box in the church in our thinking and thus box in how the Lord intends to save us and those around us. We miss how He is at work. The church comes in all different shapes and sizes to spread the gospel to people of all different shapes and sizes. Christ doesn’t need a building to build his church. He just needs ready people.

We tend towards disunity because of selfishness in our hearts. It is an inevitable reality of the human race. The church itself can be the antidote to such a plague. A gospel-centered church can bring unity within itself and among a whole people.

We have lost our mission and purpose as the people of God and suffer the lack of power and significance that comes with such a failure. The church is a powerhouse built on the gospel and redeemed to make a difference in this world. When we all learn that and live it out, the gates of hell can’t stop her!

We have rebelled against God and hated him and others in our hearts, and we deserve the condemnation and death that such sin warrants. Jesus, the obedient, innocent one, was condemned to death so that disobedient, guilty sinners like you and me could be set free. If we believe this to be true, what can we do but worship him?

We fail to recognize Jesus is the Christ, our only hope; therefore, we betray his love, mock him, and reject his rule. Because of this, darkness reigns in our lives. Jesus is the Christ. He is and always will be God's only provision for our rescue. He rules in power at the Father's right hand, and where he rules, darkness does not prevail.

We struggle with falling into temptation because we tend to respond to circumstances through our feelings rather than through faith in God. Jesus overcame the cross by submitting to God’s will through prayer in the garden. Prayer in the midst of temptation is dependency on God’s power to overcome the desire to sin that I can’t overcome in my strength. It is prayer that grants me the power to walk...

We tend to compromise our values when we don’t feel safe. When danger comes our tendancy is to flee from it. The gospel gives us peace even when we are not secure. A life with Jesus isn’t guaranteed to be safe. The guarantee is found in his presence, not his protection.

We tend to strive to be on top because we think it will satisfy us, but the journey up can make us enemies of God, ourselves, and everyone we care about. When we choose to humble ourselves for the sake of others, like Christ humbled himself for us (Phil 2:8), God exalts us in His kingdom, and that exaltation last for eternity.

We try to blame everyone else for evil in the world, but evil comes from our own hearts. Judas alone didn’t set in motion Jesus’s death. We killed Jesus with our own sins. That’s why he had to go to the cross. It was to save us. Though we, like Judas, have betrayed Jesus, he chose to give his body and his blood to redeem us and save us. We need only to admit our sin, confess our part in his death,...

We think generosity is a dollar amount instead of a heart posture, so we either give with undue pride or we don’t give at all, thinking it doesn’t make a difference (a little drop in a huge bucket). Jesus gave us all he had, his very life, for us. In response to such generosity, how can we not give all we have to him and let him determine what generosity looks like for us?

We want to rule over our own hearts and we try to convince God he should let us. God loves us enough to not let us fall into our own traps. The gospel teaches us that Jesus is the one true King forever. His Lordship leads us to an eternal kingdom that is better than the one we are trying to rule.

We let fear, time constraints, past experiences, laziness, and pride keep us from being known by God and others, and we suffer the damages of isolation because of it. God sent His own Son to earth so He could be known, and so we could be fully restored to relationship with Him. And because He is a relational God, he wants us to be in relationship with each other through the gospel.

We choose to draw near to many things other than Jesus, and because of it, we miss the one thing we need most, the Savior of our souls. Draw near to Jesus to find the on gift that can satisfy your soul.

We all tend to be too focused on what we want, think we need, or how we feel. We all want to be sovereign over our lives and live by our own rules. Jesus came to endure a violent death so that in the violence of grace he could free us from from the kingdom of self and transport us to his kingdom of life and light that will never, ever end.

Because we don’t trust in Jesus as the way to the Father, we don’t recognize him as the hope from the Father. Christ’s coming to earth was a message of hope, truth, and life because it showed sinful humans how to find the way back to the Father, through the cross of Jesus Christ.

When we forget the majesty of the culmination of so many prophesies about the coming of the Messiah, Christmas becomes white noise instead of the faith-builder it was intended to be.
