Living the exile life means we live by faith and not sight. This faith shapes and influences every area of a person’s life. It's a faith that doesn't live in fear of death, but trusts the outcome to God alone. 

The exile life, many times, will be in contrast to the surrounding culture. Fiery trials are the rule in Babylon, not the exception. But the furnace can actually serve God’s purpose.

As exiles, it’s extremely difficult to be faithful to our purpose. That’s why our faith isn’t built upon the efforts of man but the will of God. Kings come and kings go but our God is rock solid.

To be a Christian is to be an exile.  We are citizens of a new kingdom. But for now, we are living as exiles in a foreign land. And the Bible has a name for the country we’ve been exiled to: Babylon. God's reconciling work in our lives mirrors the design of a cross - both vertical and horizontal.

The cross is more than a means God used to save His people. It is also the method God uses to mature and shape His people because anyone called into God's kingdom is called to live in light of the story of the cross.

Was God just sending a message through the cross, or did something actually happen? Ask a Christian that, and they'll probably say something like, "Jesus died in my place" or "Jesus was the perfect sacrifice." But do we understand how statements fit in God's story and in our own stories?

The biggest theme of Christian mission is also the biggest obstacle to its warm reception. But in the subversive message of the cross, God makes His power known.

The Mission of Christ propels towards others. Our actions, our words, even our prayers are to be intentionally outward focused. Mature believers walk in the mission of Christ. 

Putting the life of the new age into practice begins at home. How we treat people at home says a lot about who we are. Mature believers stay connected to God - even in the home. 

Followers of Jesus can no longer live like they used to live because that life has been put to death. Mature believers walk in the life of Christ.

All that we need has been accomplished by Christ on the cross. Mature believers are secure believers through the victory of Christ.

Paul knows that what keeps many Christians from reaching maturity is their reliance on the wisdom of the world. He wants the Colossians to trust that the wisdom that comes from God is far superior to the wisdom of their age. Their culture will change, but the wisdom of God never wavers.

Paul wants the believers to grow into maturity in Christ. But he knows that it won't happen until they are convinced of the authority of Christ. 

The Gospel of Christ breaks us free from the power of sin and gives us life. And it is all about the grace of God. We are qualified and delivered by His grace.
