Old men are often said to have ”one foot in the grave” but those whose trust is wholly in Jesus Christ for time and eternity are not looking forward to the grave but to glory, for the Bible says that to be ”absent from the body” is to be ”present with the Lord”. At the age of 87, therefore, I have chosen this name for my new podcast which will feature videos of talks, comments and lectures about the Bible and science and also Bible expositions.

HOW SINNERS BECOME SAINTS Video 15.02.2023

How can the worst of sinners be transformed into faithful followers of Jesus Christ? Paul's explanation (1 Cor. 6:11) has a brevity equalled only by its profundity. They are "washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God". We examine this amazing truth.

PSALM 23; WHY THE SHEEP LIE DOWN Video 05.02.2023

GUEST MESSAGE BY PHIL WATSON. When will sheep lie down? When they feel safe. When they are properly cared for. And when they are well-fed. As the believer's "good shepherd" the Lord Jesus Christ provides the spiritual blessings which the Psalm symbolises by these physical provisions.

HOW TO BEHAVE WHEN CHRISTIANS DISAGREE Video 31.01.2023

In 1 Corinthians 6:1-8 Paul rebukes the Corinthians for taking fellow believers to secular courts to obtain redress for wrongs done to them. But this passage opens up a rich study of the biblical principles to apply when Christians disagree.

HOW TO FORGIVE Video 26.01.2023

Chapter 5 of 1 Corinthians makes depressing reading but it opens up the grand theme of the forgiveness of a true Christian who falls into sin. We learn that we should deal with such a person firmly but humbly and with a remedial intent, considering ourselves lest we also be tempted.

BEHAVIOR THAT PLEASES GOD Video 17.01.2023

Paul sets out to teach the wayward Corinthians how to behave in a way that pleases God (1 Cor. 4:6-21). They should imitate him as he imitated Christ. He appeals to OT scripture without giving a reference but we find a definitive statement on the subject in Isaiah 66:2 which we all should follow as individuals and churches.

THE LOCAL CHURCH IS GOD’S TEMPLE; DON’T DESTROY IT Video 11.01.2023

Paul presents a high view of the local church in 1 Corinthians 3:16-4:5 declaring it to be the temple of God. But he also warns that it can be destroyed. We see how this can happen and how it can be avoided.

BORN AGAIN Video 07.01.2023

A Christmas message from the Apostle John.

FROM HIDDEN WISDOM TO THE MIND OF CHRIST Video 21.12.2022

FOR AUDIO ONLY GO TO https://edgarandrews.podomatic.com Why and from whom is God's wisdom hidden, and to whom is it revealed? In 1 Cor. 2:6-16 the Apostle explains what he calls the "mystery" of divine wisdom, showing that it is hidden from human understanding until the Holy Spirit reveals it to those who God calls out of the darkness of sin-blinded minds into the light of the gospel of the glory...

AVOIDING FEAR AND FALSE CONVERSIONS Video 08.12.2022

Why was Paul fearful as he began to evangelize Corinth? (1 Cor. 2:1-5). We consider several reasons and conclude that one was the fear of false conversions among the polytheistic gentiles of that great city. He sought to prevent this by not employing his eloquence and wisdom but focussing on "Christ and Him crucified". Meanwhile God in a special vision encouraged him to speak without fear and with...

THE LOCAL CHURCH; CHOSEN, CALLED AND FAITHFUL Video 30.11.2022

According to Paul, the church at Corinth was composed of people God had chosen and called with a view to creating a local church that would glory in the LORD and not in itself or its abilites and gifts (1 Cor. 1:26-31). To that end He had chosen and called the weak rather than the strong, nonentities rather than nobles and so on, to achieve a result that would reflect His soveign power, glory and...

THE SAVING POWER OF GOD’S WISDOM Video 23.11.2022

In Paul's view there are ultimately only two kinds of wisdom, the wisdom of the world (or of man) and the wisdom of God. In 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 the Apostle develops his thesis by showing that only the wisdom of God is able to bring people to a knowledge of the true and living God. While the wisdom of man can help us know things about God it can never provide us with the means of knowing God Hims...

THE THREEFOLD UNITY EVERY CHURCH MUST HAVE Video 16.11.2022

Paul urges the church at Corinth to seek a threefold unity (1 Cor. 1:10-17) without which no church can function effectively. It consists of (1) a doctrinal (didactic) unity, (2) an organic or body-like (somatic) unity, and (3) a unity of mind and judgement (a sophic unity). We consider each in turn and ask how they can be cultivated in a local church. FOR AUDIO ONLY GO TO https://www.podomatic.co...

THE GRACE AND GOODNESS OF GOD Video 09.11.2022

Beginning his first epistle to the Corinthians (verses 1-9) Paul firmly places the whole letter on the foundation of the grace of God. He shows that in spite of all the problems in this church (problems that occupy most of the epistle) the Corinthian believers had already been "sanctified [set apart] in Christ", called and made holy in the sight of God. These were accomplished facts, not desires o...

THE GOOD SHEPHERD OWNS HIS SHEEP Video 05.11.2022

In John 10 the Lord Jesus Christ claims to be the good shepherd of the sheep but on what does he base that claim? The passage and others scriptures provide us with three answers. 1) Christ owns his sheep having been given them by the Father as both a solemn responsibility and a precious love-gift; 2) Christ keeps his sheep, caring not only for the flock but for each individual member of the flock;...

HOW TO RECOVER FROM SPIRITUAL DEPRESSION Video 25.10.2022

The psalmist Asaph has plunged into the depths of spiritual despair (Psalm 73) and many Christians today experience  similar episodes of spiritual depression and find no way of escape. Asaph found deliverance when he "went into the sanctuary of God" and under the new covenant we have such a sanctuary in the Word of God, the scriptures that bring us close to God through faith in Christ. We see how...

CHRIST RISES, GOD PROCLAIMS Video 19.10.2022

Apology; I briefly published this episode on Acts 17 PART 2 attaching the wrong video, namely, the already published PART 1. The correct new video is now appended. Christ's resurrection is much more than a postscript to his atoning death on the cross. It is rather God's fourfold proclamation of (1) the deity of Christ, (2) the answerability of all humanity at the final judgement, (3) the purity or...

BACK TO BASICS WITH THE APOSTLE PAUL Video 05.10.2022

Preaching the gospel to the athenian philosophers on Mars Hill (Acts 17), Paul is compelled by their ignorance to go back to basics and explain that the true God is the unique Being who "created the world and everything in it" and "gives to all, life and breath and all things". We explore the implications of these basic truths for ourselves, emphasising the Bible's teaching that the Second Person...

CHRISTIAN BEHAVIOUR AND THE RETURN OF CHRIST Video 27.09.2022

Christ's second coming seldom affects the way Christians behave today as it did in the early church. Yet the parable of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46 challenges our thinking on this issue because, as we seek to show in this podcast, it confronts us with the way we respond to Christ's "new commandment" to love our fellow believers as Christ loves us. Apologies for the misquote from me...

HOW TO BE SPIRITUALLY STRONG Video 21.09.2022

Christians today need strength and courage to live effective and explicit christian lives in societies that are indifferent and often hostile to the gospel of Christ. The opening verses of the book of Joshua (1:1-9) point the way by giving us three reasons for being strong and bold ... God keeps his promises, God rewards obedience, and God never leaves or forsakes us. FOR AUDIO ONLY GO TO https://...

GOD MY EXCEEDING JOY (PART 2) Video 12.09.2022

In Part 1 of this study of Psalm 43 we saw that Christians possess resources that they often fail to use. The psalm defines two such resoures, the truth and light of God. We explained what these are in Part 1 and here show how they can lead us to God as the source of "exceeding joy" following the psalmist's spiritual (thought) pilgrimage to the ancient tabernacle where we discover the joy of forgi...

GOD MY EXCEEDING JOY (PART 1) Video 07.09.2022

Psalm 43 begins in despair but ends with delight, the delight of finding God as the source of unfailing joy even in the midst of trouble. The Psalmist shows us how the transition from depression to delight cn be accomplished by a spiritual pilgrimage of the heart and mind and in dependence on the Word of God and the light shed upon it by the Holy Spirit. Part 1 of a two-part message preached at th...

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT Video 24.08.2022

The Christian is engaged in a war that rages in his or her own heart, a conflict between the old fallen nature ("the flesh") and the indwelling Spirit of God. In Galatians 5 the apostle Paul explains how we may walk in the Spirit and subdue the works of the flesh so as to glorify God in our practical lives and walk in peace with Him. For audio only go to https://edgarandrews.podomatic.com

WALKING WITH CHRIST Video 13.08.2022

There were few in the church at Sardis (Rev. 3:1-6) who remained faithful to the apostolic gospel but the glorified Christ knew each one of them by name and they "walked" (lived out their daily lives) in intimate companionship with their Lord through all their trials, and did so clothed in His imputed righteousness. We find here and in linked OT prophecies something of what it means to be saved by...

HOW TO REVIVE A DEAD CHURCH Video 08.08.2022

Many churches today are socially alive but spiritually dead or nearly so. The letter to the church in Sardis in Revelation 3:1-6 is therefore highly relevant to us because it not only diagnoses our present problems but also provides a five-point program authored by Christ Himself for reviving a dead church ... watch, strengthen, remember, hold fast and repent. See how it works in this video. FOR A...

A CLOSE LOOK AT CHIMP AND HUMAN GENOMES Video 08.04.2022

Chimpanzees are no more our close relatives than mice. We examine in lay-person-friendly terms the claim that the chimps and humans share 98% of their genes and must therefore have had a common ancestor. We began this examination in a previous episode (go back to previous episode to watch the first part) but we now get into the detail of how genes are expressed. It is the expression of genes that...
