The Lord knows that the future of His people is going to get worse before it gets better. By the way of preparing them he calls out the plays of those empires who will rise against them but it will be God's kingdom that will ultimately win the day.

The world’s kingdom values riches, comfort and being served. Jesus completely flips this upside down, and shows us that the way into His kingdom is through being poor, suffering with him and serving God and his people. This road is hard, but it offers us entrance into an eternal kingdom where we will find real riches, everlasting comfort and eternal life with Jesus.

Have you ever noticed that our best moments are closely followed by our worse? Like the disciples we will also discover that Jesus is always able to guide and comfort us in the highs and lows of life.

Do you ever mistake your partial sight for full sight? The Apostle Paul reminds us that we see through a glass darkly but our own self reliance can make us forget this. Jesus shows us that only he can make us see.

Our superficial attempts to make ourselves clean are not enough. In fact, they often make us dirtier. The Lord Jesus shows us that the real issue is not our outward deeds, but with our corrupted hearts. Yet, He can truly make us clean only when we respond with dependent faith.

How can we serve God in the face of rejection, opposition and impossible odds? God’s messengers may be rejected, opposed and out of their depth but can be sure that He is ever present to fulfil his purposes.

Who or what do you go to when you are on the brink of hopeless despair? In the space of two crossings at the sea of Galilee, Jesus will: calm the fears of the disciples; exorcse a demon possessed man; heal a sick woman and raise a girl from the dead. Jesus helps the hopeless.

What stories do you tell yourself? Jesus told stories that highlighted the truths of the kingdom of God. How do his stories interpret our own and connect us to his meta-narrative?

Reaching out to people not like him, appointing his Twelve apostles, casting out demons, healing the sick, and making the Pharisees look silly. Another action-packed part of our journey through Marks's Gospel.

Why welcome a Saviour if the world seems fine the way it is? His power to heal the sick or His will to receive scum? There’s more to gain receiving and all to lose for challenging the Son of Man.

What proof would you need to believe that someone is God in person? As we step into the book of Mark, consider the action packed CV of Jesus typified in the opening chapter and ask yourself, ‘Why would he prevent people from telling others who he is?’
