For the third time Jesus predicts his death and resurrection, but this time he expands his explanation to include new images and metaphors. His teaching had application for his students then and it has application for us now.

When Jesus told the wealthy man to sell everything he had, he was doing more than teaching about money. He was breaking the boxes people put him in; he was turning the values of this world upside down; and he was focusing on the renovation of the human heart. The application for us has everything to do with doing the next right thing and trusting God with the outcome.

From a cup of water to a millstone to salt to cutting off body parts, Jesus teaches his disciples an important truth about the kingdom of God. And it has application for us today.

This week we return to a passage we walked through five months ago. It’s a message we still need. When Jairus came to the edge of hopelessness, Jesus invited him to fear not and believe. What he did next made all the difference, and it can for us too.

The disciples had a hard time understanding why Jesus had to suffer, die, and come back to life. Their lack of understanding has a lot to teach us about our own lives, especially how we help others.

Jesus met a dad who struggled with his faith. What we learn is that the kingdom of God is not opposed to doubt. It’s opposed to rebellion and pride.

When the veil is pulled back and we discover the way things really are in this world, we don’t find a magic political formula or a super-power medicine that cures all diseases or an economic theory to make us rich. What we find is a person: Jesus!

Jesus told his apprentices that he had to suffer and die; then he would rise again. He also told them that if they wanted to be like him they would have to pick up their cross. The way to true life may not look like what we expect.

We look back at 2019 as a church family in order to cast a vision for 2020.

God moves in unexpected ways and reveals himself to unexpected people. This happens not only in the ministry of Jesus but also in the Christmas story. We might be surprised by the application for our lives.

Mark highlights the growing conflict between the abundance and compassion of the kingdom of God with the violence and pride of the kingdoms of this world. This conflict is woven even into the Christmas story. 

This passage shows us that God is present in the mess of our real lives. But does God want to be present in our mess, or does he just deal with it because he has to? The story of the Bible answers this question, and it teaches a lot more about what "God with us" means.

The healing of a deaf and mute man doesn’t just have something to teach us about Jesus; it also has something to teach us about what it means to celebrate “God with us” this Christmas. It’s an application that affects how we live our real lives this season.

The Corinthians might have had the best intentions to be generous, but they needed accountability. They needed Titus to help them reach their goal. Generosity needs accountability. This has application for our real lives.

Paul doesn’t demand Christians to give back to God a specific amount or percentage of income. He goes beyond all that and calls Christians to give from the overflow of their position in the kingdom of God. For one church that was “beyond their ability.”

When people change their life and turn to God, their relationship to the material world, especially money, also changes. God’s amazing grace doesn’t just get you to heaven; it gets you to generosity.

This week we’re looking at Mark chapter 7:24-30 where Jesus healed a woman’s daughter from an impure spirit. This story has an unexpected twist, because the woman who asked Jesus for help was not a Jew. She lived in Tyre, far outside of Galilee.
