Joseph sends his brothers back to Canaan on a mission: to bring their father and families back to Joseph in Egypt. Though this was perhaps a daunting task, Joseph provided them with everything they needed for the journey - just as our special brother, Jesus Christ, will do for us on our journey to heaven.

Continuing our series on our beliefs and practices as a denomination, here we consider the question, "What happens when we come to The Lord's Table?"

Judah and Joseph: two brothers who lived long ago. But in this passage, each of them, in different ways, points forward to a son of Judah who would one day come, a Saviour required and a Saviour who has revealed himself to be full of forgiveness and able to provide beyond what we could have imagined for ourselves.

Whilst not yet revealing his identity to them, Joseph warmly welcomes his brothers and sits them down at a feast in his home. The joyful scene is a great picture for Christians of the eternity of blessing we can look forward to with Jesus!

Joseph's brothers finally stand (and bow) before him, 20 years after they sold him into slavery. But they don't yet recognise him, and Joseph is determined to test them. We cannot fully receive all the blessings Jesus has for us until we first see our sin as it really is.

One of the most common pictures in the Bible is of the needy soul thirsting for life. Do you thirst for God? Jesus invites all who do to come to him in faith.

During our communion season we consider Christ's fifth word from the cross, "I thirst", revealing to us the depths of his humanity and the depths of his suffering - and yet, his unflinching desire to fulfil his Father's will.
