Do you play? Do you play with your dog? With your horse? Why is play so important?

This is part 1 of a series about helping our animals be polite and socially appropriate.

Sometimes, a behaviour problem or a lack of progress in your training plan is a symptom of not enough rest.

How do we get behaviours without having a handful of treats all the time? What's the secret?

Does your dog or horse opt in or opt out of training?  How can we be better trainers and better pet guardians so that our horses and dogs WANT to play with us?

I have strayed from my original purpose of this podcast to include more dog training tips as well as horse training tips.  In my ever-evolving journey of horse and dog training, I think this is valuable!  I'd love to hear your feedback.   Today I talk about how to help a reactive dog make friends on leash, and how I do a similar set of exercises with Zephyr. 

Zephyr wears a bareback pad! Oh, and also, the answer isn't a bigger bit or a prong collar or a more severe halter =)  

In this episode, I share a story about a poor choice I made and I discuss why we don't kick and bite or growl and snap like horses and dogs do with each other.

In this episode, I talk about letting horses and dogs move forward when they are anxious and asking for help if you need to.  I also discuss forgiving yourself if you get scared or frustrated and resort to harsher methods, and describe why I feed Zephyr for keeping his foot ON the ground when I'm teaching him to pick up his feet.

I found a fantastic person to help me with Zephyr! I also talk about optimal levels of arousal for learning and resource guarding aka food aggression.  

Zephyr is having trouble transitioning from walking in-hand to being ponied. I talk about lumping vs splitting, the language we use to justify punishment, and how fear affects how we train our horses. 

Zephyr is learning about grooming, and I am learning about taking my time. 

What happened with Zephyr nipped me? What is suppression? Why is promoting extreme views so damaging?  

What aspects of an animal's life do I evaluate when considering euthanasia of an older pet? We just euthanized our pony Hercules and I thought I'd share our decision making process. 

Enrichment means different things to different people. I talk about building resiliency and problem solving skills using enrichment, and discuss when to step in and make the problem easier.
