This week, continuing our series titled "Wisdom Builds the House", we surveyed the book of Proverbs, exploring how we can apply wisdom in our use of spiritual gifts. We read in Proverbs 1:7 that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction". "Fear" in this context would be best understood as deep respect and awe. Proverbs 1 through to 8 introduces us to two voices: wisdom and folly. When we get to Proverbs 9 we are presented with a choice, two houses: the house of wisdom, and the house of folly. Which one will we choose?

This week, continuing our series titled "Things Jesus Did", we explored Luke 5:27-32, where Jesus is criticised by the Pharisees for eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners. We examined what it meant (at that time and in that context) to be called a "sinner", why the Tax Collectors were included as sinners, and why the Pharisees were upset with Jesus associating with such people.

Chances are all of us have personally experienced what it is like to be at the mercy of nature. Nature is a powerful and sometimes devastating force. One of the stories we are more familiar with in scripture puts Jesus and his disciples face to face with the force of nature.

We are all created for, and wired for, connection. One way in which we find connection is through physical touch. Touch is essential for human connection, bonding and health. Simply holding hands signals to another “I am with you”. Jesus Christ clothed Himself in humanity, He offered Himself as a bridge for connection between Heaven and Earth.

Prayer is not an obligation; Prayer is an invitation. All around us, if we are paying attention, the beautiful and broken things in our world are personal invitations into prayer. We believe in prayer, but we struggle to turn that belief into a rhythm. A rhythm we see active in Jesus when Luke tells us that “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”.

Jesus is confronted by the devil after being led by the Spirit into the wilderness to complete a 40 day fast. The devil's first challenge ("If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread") was intended to tempt Jesus to prove his divine status by exercising supernatural power.

Jesus had so much to say about the words we speak, as does all of scripture. First… Words are an overflow! Jesus said that “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of…” . Words are a substance! “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.” Words need to be weighed! Despite what you might hear in media, and despite what at times we also might feel, the best days of the church of Jesus Christ are ahead of her. Jesus’ words here should give us great confidence and courage. There is hope. Because, Jesus’s commitment to his church is unshakable. He is building His church.

What comes to mind when you hear the word “eternity”. If you really want to know what eternity is all about you have to take note of what Jesus says. In Mark 10 with the story of the rich young ruler we learn that eternal life, the Kingdom of God, and salvation are 3 different ways of saying the same thing. Meaning the word eternity doesn’t describe a place, a destination, it describes a LIFE.

In Matthew 6:25, Jesus says these words “Do not worry” and for most of us, our first reaction to this thing that Jesus said would be something along the lines of “impossible” or “unrealistic”. Living without worry sounds, to most of us, as impossible as living without breathing. Jesus wants to lead us from worry into wisdom.

As Ben Green kicks off our Things Jesus Said series, he digs into Jesus' parables. God delights to reveal more to the hungry. This was the purpose of parables - to conceal the kingdom from those who misunderstood it AND did not want to understand. But to those who were hungry and seeking, the parables revealed the nature of the kingdom. 

This week Ps Aaron wraps up our Ruin to Redemption series looking at Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. We learn about the culture of the father’s house as he welcomes, forgives and restores his lost son, celebrating his homecoming with a feast. The culture of our Father’s house is one we are called to replicate as we make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit (Ephesians 4:3).

Within each and everyone one of us, there is a deep desire to find home: a longing for far more than a roof and four walls. The story of the cross redeeming people is only part of the story: God's mission in this world is to redeem home, to make the world God’s “home” and the home of all God’s creation. God’s greatest desire is that He would be present among us, and present within each person.

This week we examined the lives of Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany and Mary, the mother of Jesus. These women were all most likely present at the crucifixion of Jesus. Mary Magdalene being one of the women at the empty tomb and possibly the first to meet the risen Christ.

Ps Shaun Kicks off our 'Ruin to Redemption' series by looking at the life of Peter, following the many highs and lows of his journey. We see the faithfulness and grace of God, even after Peters failings, and what happens when Peter aligns himself with the will of God.

We conclude our vision series by reminding ourselves of our spiritual heritage as a church, and looking at the role our own hearts play in stewarding renewal and revival.
