Matthew 27:37 - 54 What words come to mind when you think about Good Friday? Glorious? Grotesque? Painful? Powerful? Bloddy? Beautiful? Here on Good Friday as we consider Jesus’ crucifixion from Matthew 27: 37 - 54 we will be confronted by some very weighty things. Listen, and as you do, let your heart be changed by the wonder of Grace. 

A wise man once said that you have no triumph before you’ve face the pain. In this Psalm we lean into the reality of this pain-filled life along with the Psalmist and consider the horror of affliction in order to more fully embrace the joy of deliverance.

Mark 14:32 - 42, 50 - 52 Do you ever get weak, or fall off? Do you ever feel the shame of drawing away from God during the hard times of life? The smell of a hot fresh baked loaf of bread is one of the best smells I know. In this Psalm another type of bread is described - the bread of anxious work, and it’s not very go0d. God is a good father whose desire is for His children to rest in His provision and protection, and to intentionally stay in that best of safe spaces.

Fear God and keep His commands. It’s pretty much that simple, and also that hard. And Solomon leans in on us to make sure that we keep the main thin, the main thing here in Eccl. 12 to wrap things up. 

Data doesn’t lie, but data is used very effectively to lie, and to deciieve. In this passage the Psalm list sets out to remind the congregation of the benefit of keeping our eyes open and the dagners of self-deception.      

What we teach is important. But so too is how we teach what we teach. Solomon illustrates this just before closing his lesson on living, and helps us to see how graciously God meets us where we are to bring us to a better place by preparing His lessons for us such that they entice and satisfy our longings.

The Psalmist pulls back the curtains here so that we can see behind the scenes on what happens when God’s protection is removed from the land and His people. There is a stark warning and reminder for all of God’s people here for those with the humility to receive it. 

Here in Ecclesiastes 12:1 - 8, the preacher moves to his conclusion - his closing argument before dropping the mic. He takes pain to paint a picture of terror and hopelessness and futility. We believe that he does this to invite us to continue wrestling with the question, “What is the true purpose of life?”. Because, in truly wrestling deeply we will come to see the insufficiency of our own power...

Next up: delivery. Why, because we so often are in dire need of being delivered. As the people of God approach His temple with joy, we are absolutely brought face to face with the fact of our weakness and inability to depend on ourselves. This leaves us either ready to fall down before, and into God’s hands, or to turn our backs on Him. 

God does not grade on the curve, He grades on the cross. In this last section of Ecclesiastes 11 we hear the preacher starting to wrap up his sermon. On the one hand, we have desires which God has given to us to be fulfilled, as a blessing to us. But He alone will judge if we have gone outside of His boundaries as we life. Yet, our hope is not in living by our own strength within His boundaries, b...

There is a tremendous beauty in the movement  through a worship service. This stop on the road of Ascent Songs reminds us that a true, honest and full worship services moves through all of the real experiences we have, and turns them back to God as we relate to Him through the ups and the downs.

The Preacher continues on the theme from verses 1 - 4 in Ecclesiastes 11 here in verses 5 - 7 and opens the discussion up even further so that we move beyond the illusion of control, to the fillusion of knowledge. And here again he tells us The best way tho thread this needle is to move ahead trusting God. 

As we continue through these Psalms of Ascent we come to what is probably the most well known one. In this one we are invited to join in the singing and celebration and joy of heading up to the house of the Lord. We also stop to reflect on Palistine. 

Here in Ecclesiastes 11:1- 4, we are called and encouraged to continue investing even though we investment comes with risk. The preacher points us to the fact that the illusion of control is cruel on the front and the back end - on the front end it blinds us to the real risk that we face, and on the back end it  forces us to choose between fear futility or fight. There is so much more that we need to be rescued from that we almost ever give thought to. This Psalm invites ut to stop and take stock of all of the ways and means that God has used to come to the aid of His people.

There are several simple rules that we should conduct our lives in light of, whether we are rulers, or ruled. Here in Ecclesiastes 10:16 - 20 the Preacher’s encouragement is to do what we may to live where wisdom is valued. 

We often call out for help when we find ourselves the victim of the cruelty of life, or other people. But how often do we look at our own lying lips as the trap that we need to be delivered from? In this passage, the Psalmist forces us to reflect on all of the possibilities.

Did you ever ask, “What’s the point in trying? What’s the point of doing so much work since it’s all going to fall apart?” This is what the Preacher is exploring in this passage here in Ecclesiastes 10 8 - 15. Even though there is no promise of success in our labors, he still encourages us to endure and commends to us the life of wise, prudent enjoyment of the work that is in front of our hands. 

There is no greater foundation for life that God has given to us then His Word. When the Psalmist talks about God’s Word he uses several terms including: law; precepts; statues; ordinances; law; commands; and more. This passages gives us a study in how to study and learn to live by His Word.
