When Canada went to war with the Central Powers in 1914 all of a sudden tens of thousands of Ukrainians who had come to Canada from the Austro-Hungarian Empire were deemed enemy aliens. 100 years ago today, August 15 1917, the Canadian Corps commanded by their newly appointed corps commander Arthur Currie were ordered to capture the city of Lens in support of the larger British offensive known as the Third Battle of Ypres.
