Too often, we see prayer as something to do when we need help. We neglect that the Lord of the universe has made himself readily available to his people. This morning, we continue in the book of Joshua. As the chapter begins, we see Manasseh, Gad, and Reuben cross the Jordan to settle on the land given to them. While there, they construct an altar to the Lord that provokes war with the rest of Israel. This Sunday, we finished up the allotments of land in Joshua. As a final note, Joshua lays out the establishment of refuge cities. As we look at the text, Dolan highlights several aspects of God's character. As we continue in Joshua 9 this week, we see the Israelites deceived by the Gibeonites. They are in fear of the God of Israel and seek to be in covenant with them for their own protection. The Gibeon story is one we can relate to- they deserved the wrath of God, yet they are shown grace. If our salvation was dependent on us, there would be no hope. In Joshua 8, after their defeat at the hands of Ai, the Israelite story is a little more optimistic as they hand Ai a massive defeat.
