I first came to the Peninsula when I was 17 and I fell passionately in love with the place, despite not knowing my Irish great-greatgreat- grandmother was buried here. I also fell in love with the word ‘Coromandel’ which sounded so exotic and romantic. I knew it was from India, but I had no idea how it got here. At that stage I was not asking critical questions about the names or their origins......

Mid-September marks one year since resigning from my teaching position and becoming a full-time artist! After graduating with my Fine Art degree in 2005, being a full-time artist is something that I have always strived for … who knew it would take me 18 years to figure out how to make it work?! Centuries ago, Māori settled Tīkapa Moana|the Firth of Thames, revelling in the abundance of kaimoana, freshwater eels and birdlife. Kauaeranga, near the river-mouth, was a significant settlement. Upriver in Parawai, the street name Herewaka means ‘safe anchorage’. Pā and kāinga shaped the coastline from Tararu to Kōpū and up the Waihou River to pā like Oruarangi, and the rich soil was cultivated....
