Coffee Talks with Mike

Religion EN ↓ 82 episodes

Some close friends of mine sometimes ask me questions about the Bible or theology, and after a 10-15 minute monologue they say, "Hey, we weren't ready for a PBS special Mike... can you wrap this up." It's become a running joke, and so I figured maybe I'd start this up. I know a lot of people are interested in some of the books and authors that I am interested in, but often don't have the time or energy to dive into a 200 page read. Sometimes they just want a summary. So this is me reflecting on what I'm reading or thinking about. I hope you find something that resonates with you!

Episodes

E7: The End Is Where We Start (This Hallelujah Banquet by Eugene Peterson) 11.06.2021

This book is a collection of sermons by the late Eugene Peterson, primarily known in most circles as the author of "the Message," and this sermon in particular focuses in on the book of Revelation and our expectations of how God works in the world and our lives. Definitely give it a listen and DEFINITELY get this to read.

E6: The Sacred Journey by Frederick Buechner 08.06.2021

This week's book builds on what Merton covered in Seeds of Contemplation, so I think you'll enjoy this if you did that.

E5: Things in their Identity (Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton, ch 5) 01.06.2021

Definitely getting a little deep here this week: Who are you? Who am I?  I first read this chapter by Merton back in November of 2019 during a difficult season of my life, and this gave me some helpful tools and language to think about where I was and where I was going. It was especially helpful as it was just before the pandemic and quarantine began. I hope you enjoy it as well.

E4: Seeds of Contemplation (Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton, ch 3) 27.05.2021

Merton was the man! I love this book and you will probably be hearing a lot about it from me. The insight Merton gives into "everyday" kind of things is so so good. I hope it's as thought provoking for you as it is for me.

E3: Pre-written Prayers (Letters to Malcolm by CS Lewis, Ch 2) 24.05.2021

This chapter is about the value and purpose of "pre-written" or "ready-made" prayers.

E2: Liturgy (Letters to Malcolm by CS Lewis, Ch 1) 22.05.2021

This episode I'm reflecting on a quote about what liturgy is for in church services from C.S. Lewis's book Letters to Malcolm . This book is a quick read but one of my favorites. The "letters" are all fictional correspondences as an avenue for Lewis to address certain topics about prayer.

E1: Introduction 22.05.2021

This is a brief explanation of why I am gonna be recording some monologues about books I'm reading. Stick around!
