As part of the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, I am highlighting a particular regiment on each day of the anniversary. Today, we remember the story of George Sandoe and the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. Sandoe would be the first Union solider killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.

On this special Memorial Day episode, I share the account of Robert Gould Shaw at the Battle of Antietam, and he summarizes the horrific combat and terrible loss of life in the bloodiest day of the American Civil War. He also reflects on the impact of such loss on the families on the homefront, who would never hear from their loved ones after that terrible day.

This episode is in tribute to the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and their engagement at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia on May 14, 1864.
