This first sermon from a short Christmas series called "The Weary World Rejoices" will remind us that God meets us in the darkness, grief, spiritual fatigue, holiday pressure, and weariness of life. He doesn’t wait for us to fix our lives; He brings His light and life right into our broken places.

James ends his letter without a tidy conclusion because he expects the church to go and live it out. After twelve weeks in this book, the call is clear: “go write chapter six” by being a people who pray in every season, care for one another in suffering, confess our sins honestly, believe God for healing and restoration, and go after those who drift so the wandering are brought home. James uses these verses to teach the early Christians how to respond to the oppression they were facing, not by usurping God’s role as avenger, but with a persevering and prophetic patience. Only God can fully and fairly right all wrongs, and He has promised to do so when Jesus returns.

Flowing out of the previous section, these verses call Christians to reject pride and humbly submit to God in order to be His rather than the world’s friends. Worth noting, a key test for demonstrating this transformation involves how we speak to and about other people.

This morning's passage of Scripture will help us to define ‘Wisdom from Above’ by contrasting and comparing it with ‘Wisdom from Below’ (purity and peacefulness rather than jealousy and strife). We'll also explore a test of sorts that can help us know which wisdom we are following.

Words are powerful. They can build up or tear down, heal or wound, bless or curse. James reminds us that our tongues, though small, hold incredible influence — and that controlling our speech is one of the greatest challenges of faith.

Join us this week as we wrestle with the problem of faith without works. True faith is shown through action, like Abraham offering Isaac and Rahab helping the spies. Without works, faith is dead, empty and lifeless.

While society often values wealth, status, and appearance, James reminds us that true faith sees everyone through the lens of God’s love. In this passage, we’ll explore why favoritism has no place in the life of a believer and how mercy triumphs over judgment.

Our words, our attitudes, and our actions all reveal what’s happening in our hearts. In these verses, James reminds us that true faith is more than listening to God’s Word — it’s living it out. He calls us to slow down, listen well, control our tongues, and show compassion in practical ways.

Life is full of pressures, and in those moments, temptation often feels close at hand. James reminds us that while trials can lead to growth, temptation leads to destruction — but God provides a better way. In this passage, we’ll see God’s promise to those who endure, the true source of temptation, and the goodness of our unchanging Father.

In James 1:2–11, we discover a surprising perspective — joy in hardship, wisdom through prayer, and humility in both poverty and wealth. This passage invites us to see our challenges as opportunities for growth and to trust God’s unchanging goodness.
