Chassidic Tales with Rav Shlomo Katz

Some chassidim were unsettled—the new Ishbitzer Rebbe, the Bais Yaakov, wasn’t doing things the way his father had. But when they pressed him, his answer left them thinking. What does it really mean to follow in someone’s footsteps?

The Kuzmirer thought his Rebbe had exposed his deepest flaws. He fainted from shame. But when the Chozeh of Lublin told him he wasn’t talking about him, Kuzmir asked: “Wait… there’s someone lower than me?” Sometimes the holiest leaders are the ones who believe they’re the furthest behind.

Everyone in Teplik lined up, eager to help a widow before Pesach. The Rav handed each man a slip of paper with an address. What they found inside… made them stop in their tracks. Some mitzvahs begin closer to home than we think.

Before tasting the holiness of Pesach, you have to know how to bend. Reb Aharon of Belz said that even to enter a car, you lower your head first. The Alexanderer Rebbe said the mikveh requires the same. The path to the biggest night of the year starts with the smallest gesture: humility.

At the Seder of the Alexanderer Rebbe, the room would go silent. Then, every year without fail, he would shout: “Whoever doesn’t believe that even the lowest Jew can reconnect tonight— is the rasha of the Haggadah. ” On this night of Mochin d’Gadlus , when the gates are wide open… would you dare not believe?

On Pesach, we’re invited to open our mouths — to speak words of truth, memory, redemption. But Reb Nechemya of Warsaw? He barely spoke at all. It was said you could pull 20,000 rubles from him easier than one unnecessary word. And that, perhaps, was his Pesach.

The Chernobler’s children could daven with the kavanos of the Arizal. As kids. But one day, their father gave them a new challenge: “Now try it in six minutes.” On Pesach, we learn that it’s not about how much time you have. It’s what you do with it.

On Erev Pesach, the Frierdiker Rebbe davened for eight hours. His father, the Rebbe Rashab, wasn't impressed. “Not today,” he said. “Today, everything is fast. Like geulah.”

Outside a chassid’s home on Seder night, the Dinover Rebbe overheard the four sons read with the same reverence as “Hashem Echad.” Even the rasha was still one. Still holy. Still His.

The Ishbitzer Rebbe would learn Torah with his chassidim from midnight until 4 a.m.— hours of fiery, mystical depth. But one student said the moment that stayed with him forever… was when the Rebbe kissed the sefer closed. Sometimes the deepest Torah is taught in silence.

Before reading Maggid on Seder night, the Chernobyler Maggid would open a secret notebook filled with miracles from his year. Because for him, the story of Yetziat Mitzrayim always started in the present.

When the Kozhnitzer Rebbe passed away, his son didn’t seem like the obvious successor. But then he quietly shared a single pasuk, with a depth that stopped the Chozeh of Lublin in his tracks.

When a new father begs the Kotzker Rebbe for help choosing a name, the Rebbe is stunned. "Once in your life, God gives you prophecy, and you’re trying to give it away?"

A chassid takes a letter from the Kotzker Rebbe to a wealthy man, certain that his daughter’s wedding is funded. But the answer is just ten rubles.  Until heartbreak brings tefillah back into the story.

The Komarner Rebbe hadn’t eaten in three days. Still, he turned to his father with a question— Where is Hashem’s grace? His father’s answer? The greatest kindness is that we’re still learning, still coming close.

The Kobriner Rebbe said he learned what it means to serve Hashem.....from a Cossack. Because when you're on guard for the King, you don’t fall asleep on your post. You don’t even freeze.

What’s a “good kop”—a good head? For Reb Pesach of Kobrin, it wasn’t brilliance in the Beis Medrash that defined him. It was how he ran to the forest and begged Hashem to open his mind. Sometimes, the best head is one that knows when to cry out.

How do you know if you really experienced Shabbos? A Gerrer chassid forgets — for half an hour — that he owns the largest department store in Warsaw. And when he remembers, it’s clear: the store may be his… but not on Shabbos.

When the young Imrei Emes is taught to close his eyes and visualize the Aleph-Beis, his teacher expects letters. But the future Gerrer Rebbe sees only one thing — and it’s not on the page.

On Simchas Torah, the Chortkover Rebbe — weak, sleepless, and barely eating — lifts the heaviest Torah scroll for Hagba with ease. When asked how it’s possible, the Rebbe answers: “When you know the Torah is lifting you, you don’t feel the weight.” Like the Aron in the midbar, maybe we were never carrying it. Maybe it was always carrying us.

The Shinover Rav loses his temper over how late they bring in Shabbos in Chernobyl. His father sends him to beg forgiveness from the Trisker Maggid. The Maggid is already on his deathbed, but he refuses to leave this world without the Shinover’s apology in hand.....

A chassid walks past the Chernobler Rebbe’s porch and hears him singing Eliyahu HaNavi . But it doesn’t sound like a longing. It sounds like it already happened. Sometimes the way a tzaddik sings about Mashiach can make you believe he's already here.

A Breslov chassid, caught between Russian and Japanese fire, remembers Rebbe Nachman's teaching: “We are here to learn new melodies.” That night, a niggun may have done more than a ceasefire ever could.

R’ Nosson wrote to his son about the moment Rebbe Nachman took his final breath. He was in the room, right beside him. The coughing was heavy. The air was tense. But then, in between the gasps, Rebbe Nachman began saying Shema Yisrael . And what struck R’ Nosson most wasn’t the timing — it was the sound of it.
