Luke and Gomer

Catching Foxes

Religion EN ↓ 479 episodes

Luke and Gomer became friends Freshman year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and 14 years later they started a podcast. The show oscillates between a conversation between just the two of us and interviews that we do together of other, fancier people. Sometimes we get explicit either by being too honest or by being too stupid. Either way, it's fun!

Sssymbolism and why the Sacraments don't make no sense 15.01.2021

Luke and I do some quick check-ins regarding the news in DC, why Gomer doesn't watch the news, and how that can be healthy. Then we take a brief detour and talk Project 86, WandaVision, and such, then dive into Symbolic Representation, Mythology, and why the Sacraments just seem like bizarre add-ons to an otherwise rational faith.

A Canticle for Leibowitz, with apologies to Matt Fradd 04.12.2020

Luke and I discuss the astounding book, A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter Miller Jr. Written in the 1950's at the height of the Cold War, Miller saw the specter of nuclear annihilation before him and penned this, one of the most insightful post-apocalyptic books ever written. We explore the themes as well as the original Dark Ages, and the drama of faith and reason. Then Luke ends with a VERY SP...

We start the show celebrating the Latvian people because THEY LOVE CATCHING FOXES AND CATCHING FOXES LOVES LATVIA. Then, McCarrick.... We don't analyze the report, but instead, we answer your questions about it. This isn't a series of hot takes, but a call to holiness.

The Not So Great Gatsby 13.11.2020

I loved the story, but we look deeper into the emptiness. Not all that glitters is gold, my friends. Then we reminisce about the time Luke almost moved in with my family, followed by praising Matt Fradd (backheadedly). Then we talk people-watching, party-going, Gomer's comic book obsession as a coping mechanism for his profound loneliness in middle school, and the quote about the "magical" parts o...

Morality as Ideology 06.11.2020

This episode is not about the election, but it is absolutely about the election. Luke asks Gomer about what happens when our Christian Morality is wrenched free of Christ and hardens into an ideology used for smashing our enemies. Gomer, agreeing with the premise, fears this pathway leads to the Antinomian dark side. Antinomianism means anti-law as in the commandment-based morality, rules of right...

Gomer Goes to the Woodshed 30.10.2020

Hey friends, This episode is in three major parts: Follow-up to the last episode to clarify and to apologize Ted Lasso, new American Anti-Anti-Hero Gomer's actions on the sidelines of his kids' soccer games will shock you.

Gomer Yells at Priests, with Clerically Speaking 24.10.2020

Humble and obedient priests, Fr. Harrison and Fr. Anthony, from the podcast join us this week so Gomer can yell at them. Not them, per se, but all God's priests as a collective. They take it like warrior-poets and then distill their own struggles finding God in the midst of the Church in crisis. Also, I've added a new sound - a cow mooing - to the already popular sound of a kitty kat meowing. You'...

The Real Jurassic World Rules 16.10.2020

What happens when Gomer takes a clip from Jurassic World and uses it to interpret MTV's "The Real World" from the 1990's? Not hilarity, according to my wife. Also, WHY AM I NO LONGER CONSIDERED A FAITHFUL CATHOLIC?!

Let's Feel Insecure and Talk for an Additional Hour 09.10.2020

Hey! We talked about some stuff. What Gomer will include, who knows. But I need to enter the show notes, so have create the episode. * Consecrated life! * There are a ton of great religious orders in the country that go back generations. Maybe take some time to check a few of them out. The Archdiocese of Cincinatti is hosting a Zoom get together for people interested in consecrated life. Check it...

Everything is Going to Be Alright 18.09.2020

Luke opens with a song. A terrible, terrible song. Gomer goes through the September Challenge with interesting comments on food and diets from various folks. Then Taylor Marshall (meow) comes up on the show, along with Fr. James Martin. Here's the deal. After we did this show I was cleaning the playroom in my house while my wife and kids were at the YMCA. While doing mindless labor, I listened to...

Last Week's Episode...Today 08.09.2020

Sorry for the delay. Life is a never ending gauntlet of suffering, loss and bitter partings. Anywho, Gomer was unable to record. Luke put out a few random requests for pitch-hitters on Twitter and Instagram, AND SO MANY OF YOU RESPONDED! This was such a fun epsiode to record. I think you'll enjoy it. There are three interviews on this epsiode. First, Luke chats with Lucas Hennesey, a friend from c...

The September Challenge and Cognition 28.08.2020

I didn't have power at all yesterday due to Hurricane Laura. In fact, at around the 1-hour mark of this episode you will hear as the power went out in the middle of the show! Luke and I continued and wrapped up by him chatting with me over my phone while we both recorded our own ends on our own laptops. That's the glory of not relying on Skype to provide the actual recording, just the interaction....

Gomer Finishes Harry Potter 24.07.2020

Five things came together to help me understand the plot of the Harry Potter series: Rebecca told me JK Rawlings was super smart and studied a lot about Medieval history. The playfulness of her Latin and her familiarity with it The quote from a few weeks ago about how our brains have so little in common with Medieval ways. of thinking, due in large part to the printing press My best friend persuad...

Amusing Ourselves to Death 17.07.2020

Luke and I discuss the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, How to Watch TV News, and The Shallows by Nicolaus Carr, and how they build the case against TV and the Internet in terms of conveying information density. Gomer is convinced of the argument because "The Medium is the Message." But, in a fascinating twist, we apply that to the "digital first" online church and what potential p...
