This weekend we wrap up our New Years series "Consecrate Yourself" as we have studied Joshua chapter 3 together these past 3 weeks. We have talked about how consecration is a test from God and this weekend I will unpack how to practically and powerfully pass this test, to let God change us, and to see His wonders in 2023!

We are studying Joshua chapter 3 through the end of January as we get ready for a year marked by God’s movement in and through us. This Sunday we will further unpack this chapter in scripture as we chat to through what it looks like to pray first, take risks for Jesus, and prepare for wonders in a message called “Wonders Among You.”

The process of "Consecration" leads us to intentionally dedicate our lives as holy and set apart for the Lord’s work and will. It helps us to look past our new year's goals and to make Jesus our new year's priority. There is no doubt we will all face tests this year with God and in this world. Zechariah has been wanting and waiting for a child his whole life. The interesting thing is that when he finally receives the good news he’s been waiting—that he is, in fact, going to have a child—he can’t believe it. This is often true of us as well. It can be hard to believe, and sometimes even harder to receive, the good news that Jesus offers us. 

As believers, we have the greatest story ever told. But who might God cast in the supporting roles in Jesus' story? One guy God uses is Jesus' earthly father, Joseph. in part 1 of this series we will unpack how Joseph actually lost Jesus as a child. Envy is a private sin that often carries public consequences. It has the capacity to build resentment in us, while destroying our closest relationships. But the good news is, God has given us weapons to fight back through scripture.

Lust is the psychological force that produces an uncontrolled appetite. The result of lust is often our desires controlling us more than we control them. Lust is so powerful it can literally make us temporality lose our minds and do things that go against what we believe and value. This weekend we unpacked how to fight this, where it comes from, and the purposes of sex, all according to scripture.

This weekend we examined our souls for Greed. Greed is an excessive desire for more. It's an uncontrolled pursuit of unneeded things. Jesus warns us about greed and money more than anything else in the Gospels because Greed makes our souls small. But God gives us stewardship and generosity as virtues to kill greed in our lives.

This weekend we opened up our talk about the sins that "so easily entangle us" as followers of Jesus. Pride is the root of all sin and gives way to others. God's call to us to get low, because God moves and speaks in the low places. 

Jesus makes it very clear what the purpose and mission of his church is: to go and make disciples of all the nations. Yet, for a lot of us today, the process of making disciples can seem confusing and vague. However, In his final words before ascending back up to heaven, Jesus gives us the steps to become disciples that make disciples and welcome people into his family both here and in heaven.

I am fired up to be preaching on why community is so important in our lives. Sometimes life is so painful it leaves us paralyzed spiritually, emotionally, mentally, etc. We all need people to take us to Jesus when we don't have the strength to make it on our own.

The Bible teaches us that the devil talks a lot, and when he talks, he lies. Lying is "his is his native language," Jesus says in John 8.
