Necas — who else ? — sends Canes to 3-2 overtime win 08.11.2023

For the 9th time in his career - ans 2nd time this year - Martin Necas scored an overtime game winner. 90 seconds into extra time, Necas redirected a Sebastian Aho pass over the shoulder of Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkanen and the Canes had their 2nd straight win and their 5th in their last 6 times out. Carolina improves to 4-0 in games that have gone beyond regulation and Necas has 2 goals...

Canes rally from 3-0 deficit to beat Islanders, 4-3, in OT 05.11.2023

The Carolina Hurricanes rallied from a 3-0 second period deficit to defeat the New York Islanders, 4-3, in overtime.  Sebastian Aho's 2nd goal of the year sent them back to Raleigh with 4 of 6 points on a 3-game road trip.  Jalen Chatfield's 1st goal of the season came just 32 seconds after the Islanders scored to make it 3-0 and started the comeback.  Dimiti Orlov also scored his f...

Canes stuck in Broadway traffic, fall to Rangers, 2-1 03.11.2023

The Hurricanes saw their 3-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers in New York City. Seth Jarvis was the only goal-scorer on the night for the Hurricanes who now fall 4 points off the Metropolitan Division lead after 11 games. Frederik Andersen made 24 saves in the loss. The Canes will play the Islanders on the Island Saturday night.

Andersen saves Canes in 3-2 win over Flyers 31.10.2023

Frederick Andersen overcame a slow start to make 26 saves - 12 in the 3rd period - as the Hurricanes rallied for a 3-2 win over the Flyers. Teuvo Teravainen's 8th goal of the season, with a little less than 4 minutes to play was the game-winner. Carolina's penalty kill went 5 for 5 on the night, while they scored on their only power play of the evening. Michael Bunting scored that goal, drawing th...

Turbo’s trick leads Canes to 3-0 win over Sharks 28.10.2023

Teravainen's third career hat trick and 20 saves from Antti Raanta boost the Hurricanes to a 3-0 win over San Jose. Andrei Svechnikov played his first game since March 11 as he returns from knee surgery. Teravainen's 7 goals leads the Hurricanes and is tied for 2nd in the league. Raanta's shutout is the 20th of his career in 2-plus seasons with the Hurricanes. Carolina is off until Monday when the...

Necas' 8th career overtime goal drives Canes to win 27.10.2023

Martin Necas scored twice and assisted on another as the Hurricanes broke their 3-game losing streak with a 3-2 OT win over Seattle. Necas scored his 3rd of the season late in the 1st period to cut a 2-goal deficit in half. Then with less than 5 minutes to play, he found Jesperi Kotkaniemi in the slot for the goal that brought Carolina even at 2. Then with under 10 seconds left in overtime, Necas...

Canes shut down by Lightning, 3-0 25.10.2023

Carolina played a much better game, but still fell to Tampa Bay, 3-0. The Canes allowed a power play goal late in the first period that proved to be enough for the Lightning. Brayden Point's deflection of a Victor Hedman shot fluttered past Pyotr Kochetkov for the only goal the Bolts would need, sending the Canes to their 3rd straight loss. The Hurricanes will try to snap their losing streak on Th...

Canes buried under 2nd period Avalanche of goals 22.10.2023

Canes fall apart as Colorado scores 4 straight goals to close out the 2nd period and fall 6-4 in Denver.  Carolina held a 3-2 lead after Brent Burns and Michael Bunting scored a minute and a half apart in the 2nd period.  But, with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the frame Frederik Olafsson tied the game and the Avs would score three more times to take a 3-goal lead into the 3rd.  Stefa...

Canes sleepless in Seattle after 7-4 loss to Kraken 20.10.2023

The Kraken scored twice on special teams over the final 10 minutes of the first period to build a 3-1 lead they would never relinquish. Jaden Schwartz scored on the power play at 12:18 and then Pierre Edouard Bellmare banged home a rebound for a shorthanded goal in the last minute of the first to complete a totally demoralizing back half of the frame. Seth Jarvis would score twice for the Canes in...

Canes Jarvelous in 6-3 win over the Sharks 18.10.2023

Seth Jarvis scored twice, both on the power play, and the Hurricanes stormed back with 4 third period goals to beat San Jose, 6-3. Jarvis opened the scoring for the Canes with a first period goal. He pounced on a rebound and punched it past Mackenzie Blackwood to tie the game at 1. Then, just 2 1/2 minutes after Stefan Noesen's power play goal tied the game at 3, Jarvis ripped a slap shot from the...

Canes doomed by dreadful start in 6-3 loss to Ducks 16.10.2023

The Hurricanes picked up where they left off in Los Angeles in their 6-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.  Yes, the Canes beat the Kings Saturday night, but they played very poorly in doing so.  Sunday night Carolina was dreadful in the 1st period in falling behind 3-0, a score that would prove insurmountable.  However, they did make the game very interesting in the 3rd period.  Teuv...

Martinook shootout goal helps Canes steal two points in L-A 15.10.2023

Jordan Martinook's shootout goal in the 9th round sent the Canes to a 6-5 win over the L.A. Kings.  Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas each scored to keep the penalty competition alive before Martinook's first career shootout goal -- heck, his first career shootout ATTEMPT -- ended the night.  Aho scored shothanded and set up another shorty for Teuvo Teravainen.  Turbo has goals in both...

Staal leads Canes to season-opening win over the Senators 12.10.2023

Jordan Staal scored once and assisted on the game-winning goal as the Canes beat Ottawa, 5-3, in front of a capacity, opening night crowd at PNC Arena. Staal's goal came about 20 seconds into the 3rd period, giving Carolina a 3-1 lead. But, the Sens scored twice in a 35 second span to even the score at 3. 2:02 later, Jordan Martinook stole the puck in the offensive zone, then Staal and Jesper Fast...

Canes ice Predators, 4-1 to close out the preseason 07.10.2023

The Carolina Hurricanes dominated the 1st and 3rd periods in a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators as each team closed out the preseason at PNC Arena. The Canes got a first period goal from Teuvo Teravainen to open the scoring. Then goals from Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas and Michael Bunting added to the total. Frederik Andersen stopped 22 of 23 shots in the win. Though, to be fair, the only goal wa...

Canes beaten 5-1 in final road dress rehearsal 06.10.2023

Carolina lost 5-1 in Nashville. But, on the bright side, Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov each played well. Raanta made 21 saves and was very good in spite of allowing 5 goals in 2 periods. Kochetkov was spectacular in comfortably handling 13, 3rd period shots to keep his sheet clean. Ryan Suzuki had Carolina's lone goal and 18-year old Felix Unger-Sorum had that primary assist, but each left the...

One on one with the Captain, Jordan Staal 04.10.2023

Adam Gold sits down with Jordan Staal to find out who his favorite player is, who it was, what it feels like to be the favorite and what he thinks of his brother Eric as a player.

Canes open preseason with a 5-2 win 29.09.2023

Tony DeAngelo had a goal and assist and both Canes goaltenders played well in a 5-2 win over the Lightning. Former second round pick Noel Gunler scored on a breakaway and 18-year old winger Felix Unger-Sorum also played well and were among Carolina's best players on the ice. The Canes will take on the Florida Panthers at PNC Arena on Wednesday in their second preseason game.

"We're built to be a really good team for a really long time" -- Sebastian Aho 30.08.2023

Why did Sebastian Aho sign an 8-year extension with the Hurricanes?

Carolina Hurricanes: The calm before the storm (surge begins) 08.08.2023

Adam Gold is joined by The Athletic/North State Journal's Cory Lavalette to discuss where the Canes' roster sits with about 2 months prior to opening night

Carolina Hurricanes: Free agent frenzy for Carolina??? 02.07.2023

Carolina was shockingly active on the first day of NHL free agency.  They brought back forward Jesper Fast and both goaltenders, as Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta each agreed to contracts with slight pay cuts.  But, the real splash was the -- out of the blue --  signing of longtime Capitals defenseman Dimitri Orlov and former Toronto winger Michael Bunting.  What do those t...

Carolina Hurricanes: The Captain is Back 26.06.2023

In our second summer(ish) chat, I riff on the 4-year contract for Jordan Staal, the potential for the Canes to bring Tony DeAngelo back to Raleigh, and elimination of special warm up jerseys as a remedy for protecting players who refuse to support "Pride" night.

Carolina Hurricanes: First hot stove chat of the offseason 21.06.2023

With a week before the NHL Draft, I caught up with Cory Lavalette and Sara Civian to talk about the offseason plans for the Hurricanes.  What do they need?  How will they sign some of their key players like Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei?  Is Jesperi Kotkaniemi a 2nd line center?  Will there have to be a peaceful transfer of the "C" to Sebastian Aho?  And, more...

Carolina Hurricanes: Morning After the end 25.05.2023

The Florida Panthers completed a 4-game sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals with a 4-3 win.  Matthew Tkachuk scored a power play goal with 4.9 seconds left for his 4th goal of the playoffs, his 3rd power play goal and his 3rd game-winner.  Paul Stastny, Teuvo Teravainen and Jesper Fast scored for Carolina in the loss.

Carolina Hurricanes: Morning After being pushed to the brink in Florida 23.05.2023

The Carolina Hurricanes did everything Monday night except score a goal and as a result their 1-0 loss to the Florida Panthers pushed them to the brink of elimination.  Florida leads the series 3 games to none with Game 4 on Wednesday night at FLA Live Arena.  Sam Reinhart's second period power play goal was the only marker on the night and Sergei Bobrovsky's 32 saves were all the Panthe...

Carolina Hurricanes: Morning After dropping another in OT 21.05.2023

Matthew Tkachuk's second straight overtime goal beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1 on Saturday night giving the Florida Panthers a 2-0 series lead heading back to Sunrise for Game 3 on Monday.  Tkachuk scored on the power play less than 2 minutes into overtime for the win.  But, it was probably Carolina's power play that really did in the Hurricanes.  The Canes had three chances wtih...
