Building a Life of Prayer

In Psalm 18 King David recounts both his many adversities and how God has delivered him from them. 

Psalm 17 is a prayer in which King David is seeking vindication from his enemies and God’s protection from wicked people. 

The verses in the second half of Psalm 16 are particularly important because they contain a Messianic prophecy regarding Jesus’ resurrection. 

Psalm 16 is a psalm of devotion in which King David states his commitment to the Lord as the one true God. 

In the fifteenth psalm, King David expresses what a righteous person’s life should look like. 

Verse 3 of Psalm 14 is quoted by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament Book of Romans. The point being made is that no human being is righteous before God on the basis on their own merit. 

King David begins Psalm 13 with a lament, goes on to make a request of God, then moves to expressions of trust, and finally ends with a commitment to give praise to God. 

In Psalm 12 King David laments the evil in the world and receives assurances from the Lord that He will intervene on behalf of the poor and needy 

Psalm 11 was written by King David during a time when he was facing adversity. He assures himself, and us, that God rules over everything regardless of our circumstances. 

Psalm 10 is a lament in which the psalmist expresses concern that God seems so far away. 

In the second half of Psalm 9 King David provides a reminder of God’s faithfulness and also a call to actively praise God for that faithfulness. 

In the first ten verses of Psalm 9 King David gives praise to God and proclaims God’s rule and reign. 

Jesus quotes the second verse of Psalm 8 in the Gospel of Matthew which gives us an important insight into the significance of this verse. 

In Psalm 8 King David praises God and marvels at the greatness of His creation. 

The second half of Psalm 7 says that God feels indignation every day. If that is true, how can any of us stand before him? 

In Psalm 7 King David deals with an injustice done to him by Cush. He turns to God for vindication. 

Psalm 6 is a lament in which, despite his affliction, King David does not turn away from God, but rather looks toward God. 

In Psalm 5 King David is facing a serious trial yet beautifully states his trust in God. 

Psalm 4­ can be thought of as both a psalm of lament and a psalm of confidence. 

Psalm 3 was written by King David about fleeing from his son Absalom, an account that is recorded in chapters 15 and 16 of the Book of 2nd Samuel. 

Psalm 2 is what is known as a Messianic Psalm, in that it speaks of the Messiah, Jesus.

Psalm 1 has been called the preface of the Holy Spirit to the Book of Psalms.
