This is the fifth and final week of our peacemaking series. Here, we step back from the big picture of making peace in the world and ask, how do we make peace in the sanctuary. In the midst of an age of suspicion, we look to Jesus in order to find Jesus-shaped practices that lead to opening the spaces between us where Jesus works.

Running away from conflict often seems like the fastest way to peace. In reality, conflict is often the very thing God uses to transform us so that we can experience more of his peace. As we recognize Jesus' presence with us in the midst of conflict (see Matthew 18:20) there are some very practical steps Jesus gives us to help us restore relationships with those around us (see Matthew 18:15-16).

Peace is much more than simply avoiding conflict. Peace starts with getting curious about the desires that battle within us (see James 4:1). Unmet desires lead to demands and judgements we place on others. Connecting the dots between the desires of my heart and my delight in the Lord (see Psalm 37:4) allows me to experience the peace of God.

This week we explore false foundations for peace that often try and distract us from true unity. Many times, peacemaking is first peace disturbing and for some, hard to perceive. Discernment, then, becomes a vital practice for the church when it comes to unity.
