Bothering the Band

The punks of Gnarcissists are our kind of people. Their sound and sense of humor resonate with us the same way as early Ramones or Richard Hell. Prior to their performance at Bumblefest, these resonating punks from NYC met with us for a manic mini promo episode and it was so fun. 

Combining the spirit of French chanson from the early 1900’s with a folk flare, and a touch of modern instrumentation—driving a unique combination of sounds—we gathered Gal Musette to ask her some silly questions before she headlines Bumblefest in West Palm Beach.

LA's finest purveyors of otherworldly rock n roll, Death Valley Girls, join us for the first mini-episode in the build-up to Bumblefest, and we could not be more thrilled. Bonnie Bloomgarden has been on Bothering the Band before, so she headlines our heart, as well as the fest in West Palm Beach.

As products of the 90s, no other voice represents the time and the tunes for us like Matt Pinfield. With an encyclopedic knowledge of music and endless insane stories, it was a big bucket list checkmark to hang out with him, but it is even better to now call Matt Pinfield a pal.

From Portland puppets to tortellini turtles, it was an absolute delight getting to chat with Jess Kallen, whose new album Exotherm is also incredible. Life can be hard, and that's why we can't utter it enough: make friends with musicians who know the value of whimsy and mischief. You're welcome.

This is Peyton Gilliland's first time ever being interviewed on a podcast, but you wouldn't even know it because the pop-rock man-eater is already a pro, and the possibilities for her are endless. So stoked to hang with Sei and Maya of the Montreal-based Japanese psych-rock band TEKE::TEKE, who definitely speak our language of poetry and music, film and being kind to ghosts. Their new album, Hagata, is so damn good. The audio is a little muddled but this episode has a lot of love. 

This week on Bothering the Band, we combine our two loves by interviewing musician and comedian Luke Null, who is hilarious and handsome, and who was also on SNL. The guitar comic talks about being a high school DJ, and how every cheese has its application.

From Gord Downie to Lou Reed, we got deep in music discussion with the super sweet Kevin Hearn (aka Kev Cakes), multi-instrumentalist from Barenaked Ladies, and one of the most respected Toronto musicians of the past 25 years. His seventh solo album, Days In Frames, is sonically stunning, easy and breezy...just like Kev Cakes himself.

The basis for this episode is Syd Butler, bassist for godfathers of indie rock, Les Savy Fav, and bassist for The 8G Band from the show Late Night with Seth Meyers, but it is Syd's daughter who steals the show with her music knowledge and poetry.
