Blood and Black Rum Podcast - A Cult Film / Horror Podcast
We're two guys covering all kinds of cult films from horror to action and everything in between. We try to bring funny and engaging content with our unique personalities, and we also review beer in each episode as well. Some of our past and present coverage includes Halloween specials, series retrospectives, Difficult Films month, Red Hot '80s Action Summer, '90s remakes, and a lot more. It's a pretty eclectic mix here, but if you're into cult films and beer, this is the place to be.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING 13.01.2023 1:19:11
It's yet another Friday the 13th, so we might as well pick up where we left off! 3 years ago (wow!) we covered Part IV, and it's only fair we give the Jason-less A New Beginning a fair shake. Here we talk about how much the film beats you over the head about Roy, the enchiladas, the improperly-run mental health clinic, Debi Sue's Voorheeses, and more! We're also drinking Saranac Brewery's throwbac...
New Year's Special | GHOSTKEEPER 31.12.2022 1:10:56
When you think New Year's, you think a fresh start... growth... a chance at redemption. None of these things are present in Ghostkeeper , nor is there much New Year's celebrating. However, it is one of the few New Year's-related horror movies left to cover, and we couldn't help but check out this movie that includes a Wendigo creature that... doesn't really do anything. We talk...
Festivus Series | THE SANTA CLAUSES 23.12.2022 1:20:14
For our last Festivus episode in 2022, we're tackling the six-part miniseries The Santa Clauses ! Of course, it's a tradition for us to cover Tim Allen's holiday output and this is no different. We are pleasantly surprised by this Disney+ series and we attempt to document our enjoyment over the course of this 2.5+ hour show. We talk about Mrs. Claus, Bernard's return, the Yule-verse, attempt to un...
Festivus Series | TRADING PLACES 16.12.2022 1:12:20
We are talking about one of John Landis' finest comedy films and one that takes place during the Christmas season, Trading Places ! Here we talk about the inherent comedy in watching rich people get their kicks, the duality between Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis' rockin' bod, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Beer Tree Brewing Co.'s Flannel Lined Everything winter ale! Appr...
Festivus Series | ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE 10.12.2022 1:36:58
This was Martin's pick for Festivus, and while we will admit that it is not entirely Christmassy, it does take place during the bulk of the holiday season so we will allow it. We've already covered one Bond movie ( From Russia With Love ) and now we're taking a look at George Lazenby's only excursion as 007; here, we talk about the overarching espionage narrative, the excellent action sequences, B...
Festivus Series | HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK 02.12.2022 1:32:12
Welcome to another Christmas season and a new edition of our Festivus Series! For our first episode for 2022, we are talking about Home Alone 2: Lost in New York , otherwise known as "Didn't we do this last time?" Here we talk about what makes the film work even though it's a repeat, the great scenes that make up some of our favorites, our nostalgia for the NYC atmosphere, and a whole lot more. We...
Thanksgiving Special | HOME SWEET HOME 24.11.2022 1:05:24
Hey, it's Thanksgiving and we're running out of options, so we're covering 1981's Home Sweet Home on this special episode. This is not a good slasher movie, not even close, but it's occasionally accidentally hilarious; we talk about that, the lack of Thanksgiving, the interchangeable characters, and a whole lot more for you to feast on with your turkey dinner. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro...
Episode 233: A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS 11.11.2022 1:17:48
It's about time we took on the precursor of the spaghetti western genre, and what better time to do it but right before Thanksgiving? We're bringing you an Italian buffet featuring discussion about Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone and his direction, the score by Ennio Morricone, the oft-ridiculous nature of this film, and a whole lot more. We hope you enjoy a deep dive back to our roots on the start o...
Episode 232: Halloween Bonus | HALLOWEEN ENDS 29.10.2022 1:33:18
What happened here? Where did it go so wrong? We try to break it down in this special bonus Halloween episode for Halloween Ends . We get into all kinds of mischief here, so it's best to just listen in. We're also drinking Beer Tree's Trippy Treats: Skittles sour. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro 12:00-20:00 Beer talk 20:00-end Halloween Ends
Episode 231: Craven Some Cronenberg VIII | DEAD RINGERS 25.10.2022 1:12:31
We're ending our Craven Some Cronenberg series with a discomforting film from Cronenberg, Dead Ringers . Here, Cronenberg doesn't stick to explicit body horror, instead implying the element of internal bodily mutation and harm with a story about twin gynecologists with some disturbing attributes. We talk about all of the themes apparent in the movie, the performance by Jeremy Irons, contemplate th...
Episode 230: Craven Some Cronenberg VII | MY SOUL TO TAKE 14.10.2022 1:14:59
We've done a lot of good Wes Craven movies, but it's time to take a dive into one that doesn't work so well. My Soul to Take is a late film in Craven's career, releasing just before his final movie Scream 4 , and it definitely suffers from the '10s era of filmmaking. This movie got sucked into the craze of the era, getting a 3D release and recycling a lot of Craven's previous ideas into a really m...
Episode 229: Craven Some Cronenberg VI | VIDEODROME 07.10.2022 1:28:56
With our latest episode of Craven Some Cronenberg, we switch back to Cronenberg's output with one of his finest films, Videodrome . Both of us were taken with the ways the film navigates various themes, and we think that both Debbie Harry and James Woods do a great job here diving into taboo subjects. We talk about the body horror, sexual and violent fetishism, what Cronenberg means by the movie,...
Episode 228: Craven Some Cronenberg V | DEADLY FRIEND 30.09.2022 1:11:42
We're back to Wes Craven and one of his... more underwhelming films with Deadly Friend , a cross between Short Circuit and a horror movie that has a lot of tonal changes throughout the movie. This is a first for both of us so we discuss the film's varying storylines, Kristy Swanson's miming, the gore effects, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Ommegang's All Hallows Treat Imperial Chocolate...
Episode 227: Craven Some Cronenberg IV | SCANNERS 23.09.2022 1:07:11
We return to Cronenberg in the early middle period of his career with Scanners , a film that does not focus as much on the body horror element of Cronenberg's usual themes but instead on the science fiction that goes into telepathy, as well as the science that can often cause so much damage if poorly researched. We dive into the influences in Scanners like the thalidomide fiasco in the '60s, as we...
Episode 226: Craven Some Cronenberg III | THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT 16.09.2022 1:21:02
We're switching back to Craven for our third entry in our Halloween series, and we go back to his directorial debut with The Last House on the Left . Notorious for its content, banned in some areas and lumped in with the rest of the video nasties of the time and rape revenge films, Craven's movie is a lot tamer for contemporary viewers than some might expect. It still shocks, but maybe not as grun...
Episode 225: Craven Some Cronenberg II | RABID 09.09.2022 1:07:13
Since we did Craven last week, we're doing some Cronenberg this week with his 1977 film Rabid. Much like Shivers , Cronenberg works in body horror in the scope of sexual enlightenment and, here, virus transmission, and we take a look at what that means for the film. We question the connection between the rabies-like virus and the phallic appendage of patient zero, put on some Canadian accents, tal...
Episode 224: Craven Some Cronenberg I | A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 02.09.2022 1:30:30
We begin our Halloween season and the first episode of Craven Some Cronenberg with a look at Wes Craven's classic slasher film A Nightmare on Elm Street . Of course, much has been said about this stalwart of the subgenre, but we attempt to do our best taking a look at the elements at play that define this film and how it stands out from the rest of its peers. We talk about John Saxon, stunt double...
Episode 223: Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part 2: Heat Wave Edition IV | MISSING IN ACTION 26.08.2022 1:17:13
If you know us, then you know we love a good Chuck Norris flick. Unfortunately, Missing in Action is not one of them. In fact, it's a strangely boring action movie that has potential for an interesting storyline about the lingering effects of war, in this case the Vietnam one. But its suspense is lacking, the setpieces are poor, and even Norris' one-liners are absent. However, we still find a lot...
Episode 222: Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part 2: Heat Wave Edition III | ROBOCOP 19.08.2022 1:26:01
We've got some red hot action for you where a certain Alex Murphy gets shredded and rebuilt as the formidable RoboCop ! Yes, we're talking about Paul Verhoeven's ultraviolent '80s action film about a cyborg who spearheads Detroit's privatized police force to take out crime in the city. We talk about the action and violence, the satire, the theme of memory in many of Verhoeven's films, and a lot mo...
Episode 221: Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part 2: Heat Wave Edition II | ROAD HOUSE 12.08.2022 1:26:45
Note: we had audio issues with Ryne's microphone in the first half hour of this episode; the rest of the episode picks up with better audio. We're sorry for these technical issues but hope you can still enjoy. We're back with another foray into red hot '80s action, this time with the Patrick Swayze vehicle Road House , which has just about everything you could want from a film like this. We detail...
Episode 220: Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part 2: Heat Wave Edition I | BLOODSPORT 05.08.2022 1:05:26
It's a hot one out there, so what is there to do but get entirely too sweaty with a bunch of ripped dudes and take in some '80s action movies? We're starting things off for our second edition of Red Hot '80s Action Summer with Bloodsport , a young Jean-Claude Van Damme taking on a number of fighters in a fight to the death during the Kumite tournament in Hong Kong. We talk the gay undertones, the...
Episode 219: SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT 29.07.2022 1:15:03
We're going back to a time of cops and smugglers with Smokey and the Bandit , a classic timepiece of Americana with Burt Reynolds as the titular bandit and... Jackie Gleason as the smokey? We have a lot of fun with the film and call out a number of great elements in this road movie, including Jerry Reed's oft-used soundtrack, the great onscreen chemistry between Reynolds and Sally Fields, and the...
Episode 218: ROSEMARY'S BABY 18.07.2022 1:32:40
Amidst the current political climate we thought it would be fun to cover the most iconic film about a troubled pregnancy, Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby . Itself an adaptation of Ira Levin's novel, the film covers a range of themes including the sense of alienation during pregnancy, lack of agency as everyone tells you what to do and feel about the upcoming child, and a lack of self as your enti...
Episode 217: DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS 01.07.2022 1:27:53
On this week's episode, we take on Sam Raimi's return to the director's chair with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! We talk all kinds of things - the amount of homework you have to do for this movie, the new multiverse exploration, how it fits into the Marvel canon, the changes that Raimi brings to the table, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Tree House Brewing Company's King J...
Episode 216: THE SHINING (1980) 17.06.2022 1:28:22
Since we're coming up on Father's Day, we thought it would be appropriate to cover one of the best fathers in film in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining ! We're fans of this movie but we do offer some important critiques and talk about understanding where Stephen King's criticisms come from. However, we cover a lot of ground on this episode including the element of shining, Scatman Crothers, the score...
