There is a great contrast between the self-righteousness and hard-heartedness of the Pharisees, and the mercy and compassion of Jesus seen in this passage. In this passage, Jesus responds to the faith of the paralytic's friends, and shows to all the mans greatest need was not simply physical healing but a spiritual one.
