This final command to walk as those who are wise is the longest of Paul's instructions for walking. It begins at verse 15 of chapter 5 and ends with verse 9 in chapter 6. The overriding command of this section is recorded in verse 15 and repeated twice, in verses 17 and 18: Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, Ephesians 5:15

Paul is exhorting believers not to sin like the lost do. Many people argue for holiness in order to obtain a relationship with Yahweh. Paul was advocating holiness because of the relationship with Yahweh that we already have.

What Paul is saying is that sexual sin is a violation of love. You cannot truly love another, in the biblical sense, and practice sex with him or her outside of marriage. It is impossible; they are mutually contradictory. Therefore, you cannot combine the two. There is no such thing as sexual relations, outside of marriage, done in love.

We come this morning to a new chapter, but not a new subject. We are still talking about the worthy walk. We are talking about how we are to live day by day: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children

Forgiving is what we are commanded to do by our Father Yahweh. How do we put that in practice?

What is our motive to walk this holy walk? Is it fear of the loss of salvation? No, Paul nor any other writer ever uses or hints at that. Is it fear of judgment? No, it is fear of hurting Yahweh, our God.

Scripture and other Hebrew sources teach that Yahweh has established a government in the spiritual realm that assists Him in the affairs of mankind. That is what we seek to examine this morning.

I think that all of us are overwhelmingly guilty of not heeding Paul's command here. No matter how hard we try, we all have erred with our tongues!

Paul is spelling out in detail a number of changes that Christians must make as a result of the new birth. Because we have put off the Old Man and have put on the New Man at salvation, we are to live in a different way then the unbelievers around us. And in our text for today Paul tells believers to stop stealing.

S.L. Johnson writes "As far as I can tell, the Bible does not ever justify lying, regardless of the circumstances." What do you think of that? Is it ever right to tell a lie? What if you could save a life by lying. "So what about Rahab? She lied." Let's take a look at that.

Beginning in 4:25 (and going through 6:9) Paul gets specific. He names a bunch of specific sins characterized by the Old Man that are to be put off, and godly behaviors that are to be put on. While there are some exceptions, his usual method is to state the sinful behavior that we are to put off, the godly behavior that we are to put on, and the motive or reason for the positive behavior.

So what does Paul mean by the figure of the old man and new man? We are familiar with the terms, but do we know what they mean? The relation of the old man and the new man has been much disputed. Many hold that at salvation believers receive a new self, but also keep the old self. Salvation thus becomes addition, not transformation. Regarding the title, now I am aware that Paul is not teaching Calvinism, but I hope you understand what I'm saying. Calvin actually taught Paulism. But what we see in this passage would be referred to by many as Calvinism. What we see here is the Total Depravity of Man.

Paul's point here is: Although true unity among believers already exists because of the mighty work of the Sovereign Spirit, we must work hard to preserve it.

All believers are called to have the attitude of Christ. So what exactly does this mean?

This past April 15 we had the first of four lunar eclipses. We are in the midst of a sequence of four total lunar eclipses which is called a tetrad. So we have three more to go. During the Transition Period Yahweh worked in the growing Church through miraculous gifts and spoke through His prophets to bring His Church to maturity. This was a time of change and growth, it was a time of transformation from the Old to the New. We are not in the Transition Period, and we do not have and do not need spiritual gifts.

These are not the easiest verses in Ephesians to understand. There are some difficult interpretive matters where godly scholars disagree. But, the overall theme is fairly clear. Paul is showing that Yeshua is the ascended, victorious Lord over all, and that He has sovereignly given various spiritual gifts to His church so that "He might fill all things"
