The assignment was to give a speech/talk on either a social justice issue or on joy and happiness. Please listen to two previous episodes that feature talks from this same class session, "Personal Joy and Happiness" and "Missing and Possibly Exploited." In this episode, the students talk (or rap) about social issues that matter to them. 

Recently the students in Comm101 at King (Philly) did some in-class speeches or talks. The choice was either a social justice issue or joy and happiness. Three students chose happiness at the time of the recording. Two are represented in this episode.

With no official preparation time for this discussion, Dr. Flemming proposes an impromptu episode on this topic towards the end of class one day. Is is fair to bring up "Black-on-Black" crime in a discussion on police violence against Black people? 11th and 12th grade students at Martin Luther King High School discuss it.

My class and I had the chance to sit with one of staff members at King, Ms. Lee. Ms. Lee was a student at Barratt Junior High School when Dr. King spoke there in October of 1967. She recalls that day and also gives passes some sound wisdom on to us. Forgive first couple of minutes of low sound quality.

Now an alumna of Martin Luther King High School, Anisha reflects on this past school year. She reflects on remote learning, podcasting in our class, and looks ahead a bit at what the future may hold for her.

The students tell their stories in more of a narrative format in part 2 of their experiences in "tha hood." They explore their lived experiences of survival, their opinions on the hood vs. the suburbs, syrup and sugar sandwiches, and more! They also offer solutions to the problematic aspects of the hood and why hood living is actually safe! Listen. Share. Engage.

The Juniors and Seniors of Comm101 at Martin Luther King High dig into what the "hood" is, what's it's like growing up in "the hood", the good, the bad, the character, the fun, the violence, the loss of friends, the gentrification, the patches of grass and more!
