Israel hangs around in Egypt long after the famine is over.  They eventually are going to mired in slavery : a CIRCUMSTANCE THEY DO NOT PREFER . Why might a sovereign, good Lord allow this? At the end of a severe famine, Pharaoh ends up with all the money, all the Livestock, all the indentured servants and all the land of the Egyptians. He will also end up with a 20% tax on production in Egypt. It is going to set up what comes next for the Israelites: Slavery and redemption. Egypt will be used for 400 years to incubate the baby country and people of Israel.  To start, Israel the person, and Israel the nation of 70 people, move to Goshen, Egypt.  It is a place remote enough to be off the radar, and fertile enough to foster their prosperity.  Israel IMPLANTS into Egypt and is protected and multipled.  https://youtu.be/U8IIxojne0g

In the fourth quarter of Jacob's life he goes all-in with the Lord.  He takes everything he has, every person, every dollar, and every bit of his history and follows the Lord.  Ironically, he follows the Lord into Egypt. The Rwandan genocide aftermath and Joseph have something in common: forgiving people who don't deserve it; forgiving  killers . When Joseph's almost-killers show up, he's  already forgiven them .  He did the hard work of the heart with no real assurance that he'd  ever see them again, or that they'd  ever even ask for forgiveness. How long should we stew on the legitimate wrongs others commit against us? Joseph has 20 years to think about it.  When the bad guys show up, Joseph's  difficult interior work has already been done, before they even say a word . One wrote of our passage today that it was the "theological highpoint of Joseph's life." If so, we might learn a thing or two from it.
