Nearly 25 years ago I was approached to create a remix for soundcloud.com/nigel-mazlyn-jones, an artist I’d first come across in the early 80’s. He had written a track about the ongoing environmental and political crises of the time and wanted to get its message out to a wider audience than his usual acoustic/folk followers. System 7, Guy Evans (Van der Graaf Generator) and others also became invo...

Toby Marks of Banco de Gaia has had a bumpy couple of years, with family crises having to take priority over the making of music. Nevertheless this year was to be a respite from all that, with a major new album planned. Its November 2020 release would be accompanied by a string of UK and overseas live shows. Well, we can all guess what happened to that idea. As Allen Saunders said back in 1957, "L...

I wrote this track before the current crisis had really taken off here in the UK. It was inspired by personal events last year but could equally well reflect what we are currently going through. Sometimes we are caught on tides we cannot resist. We ride the currents, letting go of expectation. In the end we emerge somewhere new.

At the end of July 2019, I was commissioned to make a track to celebrate the Lovelock Centenary conference held at the University of Exeter. The conference brought together some of the top climate scientists and academics from around the world on the occasion of James Lovelock’s 100th birthday. (He was the ‘inventor’ of the Gaia Hypothesis. And, yes, he was there and gave a fascinating talk). To m...

'For Stone (West), Pt. 1' is the first single off 'Motion', the stunning new album by soundcloud.com/tobymarksmusic (AKA soundcloud.com/bancodegaia) and soundcloud.com/andrewheatharts. The track was inspired by a trip to Wales, where the pair visited The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth and then plunged deep into Llechwedd Slate Caverns. Earlier this year my Disco Gecko label helped Sophie Barker, singer with Zero 7, The Egg and more, break a 6 year silence by releasing of her 3rd solo album ‘Break the Habit’. Hailed as “a superb batch of original songs” by the Irish Times and “sublime” by The Crack, the album successfully blended her upfront live sound with more atmospheric, mood driven electronica. In between festival appearance...

For the fourth and final single from Banco de Gaia’s ‘The 9th of Nine Hearts’ album, he’s chosen a track that exemplifies what some would describe as the archetypal Banco sound: ‘The Princess and the Sky Goat’ is ambient dub at its finest, featuring a rolling bassline courtesy of James Eller (The The) and lush saxophone from Dick Parry (Pink Floyd). The remixes are in a similar vein, with Ornah-Me...

’91’ celebrates the ‘magical era of rave culture’ in the heady and halcyon days of the early ‘90s, and contemplates how much has changed in the 25 years since - not just the scene and the music, but the lives of those involved. Cue mining of sonics from that era, a lush Banco de Gaia production update and a minor key melancholic feel that has gained early support since the release of the criticall...

Banco De Gaia’s new single, featuring soundcloud.com/sophiebarkermusic (Zero 7) on vocals, is ’91’, the upbeat 4/4 stand-out track from autumn’s ‘The 9th of Nine Hearts’ album. ’91’ celebrates the ‘magical era of rave culture’ in the heady and halcyon days of the early ‘90s, and contemplates how much has changed in the 25 years since - not just the scene and the music, but the lives of those invol...
