Bald Move Prestige

We’re filling a huge gap in our nostalgic movie catalog with our 35th anniversary coverage of Stand By Me, the 1986 coming-of-age story about 4 young friends who hear rumor of the body of a boy in the woods and journey into the wilderness to find it. It stars someone both beloved and reviled by Star Trek fans around the globe, as well as River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and a very young, very chubby...

It's the 30th anniversary of this Coen Brothers classic so we're digging it out of the archive for a re-release. Thanks to überfan Anthony Basich who commissioned this personal podcast, for one of his favorite films, "Barton Fink". We talk about the occasionally dark, occasionally funny, very deep and dreamy, take on the creative process, the Hollywood establishment, the rise of national socialism...

This week’s prestige film is Pump Up the Volume. Christian Slater plays a mild mannered highschooler by day who transforms into pirate radio station DJ Happy Harry Hard-on by night, to scandalize his conservative town with profanity laced tirades about sex, drugs, and the utter meaningless of life. Is this movie just teen-agey angsty bullshit, or does it have something relevant to say in 2021 wher...

This week, we’ve got my absolute favorite Paul Giamatti movie, Sideways. It’s a well-written but also hilarious movie where an extremely depressed Paul Giamatti begrudgingly helps his college roommate philander his way through northern California wine country. It has some all-time classic Giamatti moments that we can’t wait to talk about. Get Sideways with us this on this podcast. Hey there! Check...

Forrest Gump is an artifact of a more innocent age; a time before Tom Hanks learned to make fire. Before Robin Wright made binge-watching a lifestyle. Before Hollywood acknowledged that Pulp Fiction had changed the way audiences engaged with movies. Join us for the podcast to take a trip back in time and find out if this Academy darling still holds up. Hey there! Check out https://support.baldmove...

You've seen the trailer for The Green Knight, right? It looks really cool, like a flashier, trippier version of Excalibur. I mean, look at that poster! That's awesome! Well, if that's what you're expecting of the movie you're going to be disappointed. It's definitely more of an art film than an action movie. Check out the podcast to hear our non-spoiler review and trailer talk and then, if you're...

This is in the running for the worst podcast Bald Move has ever released. One of us was feeling what this movie was doing. The other, not so much. We also struggled to figure out exactly what this movie's thesis was. Regardless, we talk for about an hour about Liam Neeson's wolf-based Taken follow-up. Hey there! Check out https://support.baldmove.com/ to find out how you can gain access to ALL of...

Marriage Story is deceptively named, it has a deceptive poster, and its characters are deceiving (or at least deluding) themselves and their spouse. It's a passionate movie that also feels real in the way that it could happen to anyone anywhere, even though its happening to two exceptionally successful people. Join us for the podcast to hear our full review. Hey there! Check out https://support.ba...

It’s the lesser-known, though still excellent, Al Pacino gangster film where he plays a recently released Puerto Rican gangster in NY who wants out of the game, he just needs to scrape together the cash to buy his way into his buddy’s tropical rent-a-car biz. It also stars a young John Leguizamo as Benny from the Bronx who’s the next generation of gangsters looking to make a name for themselves. I...

Almost famous is one of those movies that shouldn't feel as real as it does. It's an outrageous story about a teenaged musical critic who goes on tour with an up and coming rock band in the 1970s and accidentally finds himself writing the cover story for Rolling Stone. Totally relatable, right? Well, turns out it's a semi-autobiographical depiction of the writer / director Cameron Crowe's childhoo...

Maybe it's young Anthony Hopkins? Maybe it's the exceptional sound design? Maybe it's just that his style hadn't fully blossomed? Whatever the case, it's possible that we’ve found a David Lynch movie that’s un-Lynchian enough for even Jim to love! Welcome to the 15th anniversary podcast for The Devil Wears Prada. It's not exactly my kind of movie but we missed the 10th anniversary and we know that a lot of our audience loves this movie so we checked it out. 15 years on, it seems like a bit of a mixed bag. The personal story of escaping a life that you never wanted in the first place is inspiring, but the way the movie treats the fashion ind...

This week we’re talking about an absolute classic. It’s #4 of AFI’s top 100 movies of all time. That’s right, it’s Raging Bull. Join us for the podcast to find out how a guy who never met a relationship he couldn’t punch his way out of is a lot like my dad. I promise it’s not as dark as that sounds. Get Shorty's portrayal of Hollywood might feel a little dated over 25 years later but it remains undeniably cool, which is what you'd expect from an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel. I was honestly nervous about this one. It's supposedly going to be Daniel Day-Lewis' final film and I'd heard mixed reviews before checking it out. It's also a movie about the stuffiest of dressmakers which is paced very... precisely. However, thanks mostly to a few incredible performances, it held my interest long enough to get to the moments that set this movie apart. There are some serious spoi...

Thanks to epicmouthful for commissioning the podcast for Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". It's absurd and hilarious, it's got something to say, but above all else, it's imaginative. I think that's the highest compliment you could pay to the co-writer and director of this film as Gilliam brings his "Trilogy of Imagination" to a close. Join us for the podcast to hear our full re...

Thanks to our fan Brady, we’re talking about one of my favorites, Sofia Coppola’s 2003 tale of ennui and self-discovery, Lost in Translation. Come listen to me discuss the early beginnings of my ScarJo crush as well as what makes this movie so personally identifiable to me and to probably everyone. Today we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of A Knight’s Tale. Even if you’re not a fan of romantic comedies, you’ll absolutely love the other parts of this movie. It contains more star power than any movie has a right to, with the likes of Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, and Mark Addy, and certain unforgettable someone from Breaking Bad. Tom Cruise has a problem. His imported car flipping business is failing and he just found out that he has a secret brother who is an autistic savant. But those aren't his problems. His problem is that he's an asshole. But there's a cure for that and it's a movie called Rain Man. Join us for a discussion of this critically acclaimed classic film to hear what we think of it 30 years later. Check out...

The Verdict is a movie about a medical malpractice lawsuit that marks a milestone in Paul Newman's career. Join us for a discussion of this deceptively good film that turns the charismatic leading man into a sad, old, washed up lawyer trying, and perhaps succeeding, to rekindle his life. “Amadeus” fictionalizes a rivalry between one of the all-time great composers, Mozart, and the much less remembered Salieri. It has been designated as one of the top 100 movies ever made. Does it hold up in 2021? Check out the podcast to find out what we thought. We were under the mistaken impression that Basic Instinct was a Prestige film, because neither of us had seen it. What we got was a softcore, movie-length episode of Red Shoe Diaries directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. Whether it’s thrilling satire or a satirical thriller, we certainly had quite a bit of fun with it. Check out https://club.baldmove.com or http...
