Ayyā Medhānandī Bhikkhunī, is the founder and guiding teacher of Sati Sārāņīya Hermitage, a Canadian forest monastery for women in the Theravāda tradition. The daughter of Eastern European refugees who emigrated to Montreal after World War II, she began a spiritual quest in childhood that led her to India, Burma, England, New Zealand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and finally, back to Canada. In 1988, at the Yangon Mahasi retreat centre in Burma, Ayyā requested ordination as a bhikkhunī from her teacher, the Venerable Sayādaw U Pandita Mahāthera. This was not yet possible for Theravāda Buddhist women. Ins...

Ayya Medhanandi: Unexpected Treasure 24.08.2021 19:34
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) Deep in the space of our hearts there is a sanctity unreachable by any vehicle other than wisdom. We travel there silently to explore the galaxies that lie within us. Until we try, we can’t know the wonders of that dimension. Yet we touch this sanctity by parenting the mind with pure intention, humility, uncompromising awareness and trust. The mind gains balan...
Ayya Medhanandi: To Die With A Peaceful Heart 18.07.2021 8:46
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Develop health of the mind. Many who face dire illness and many at the cusp of death overcome their fear or face death fearlessly. How is that possible? Caring for the mind can bring it to peace whereas the health of the body will never free the heart from the pain of losing what is most precious to us.
Ayya Medhanandi: Purest Gold 27.06.2021 31:38
(Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community (TBC)) The sublime attitudes of loving kindness, compassion, joyous empathy and serene composure create for us a path, a moral training to guide us not to ransom our goodness or our intrinsic values for the fleeting joys of worldly gratification. As we purify the heart, we hasten our escape from the cyclic rounds of rebirth. So let us be heroic in the good. Wh...
Ayya Medhanandi: By Love Alone 27.06.2021 29:37
(Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community (TBC)) Patience, humility, and compassion serve as the mind’s compass to enlightened wisdom and unconditional love. Breath by breath, we triumph over hateful feelings until the pain of others becomes unbearable to us. It’s an exalted work of heroic proportions, accomplished through undaunted perseverance, forgiveness, and trust, revealing the jewel within our...
Ayya Medhanandi: Forsake Harm 26.06.2021 38:54
(Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community (TBC)) How clarity and compassion will help us to live the teachings and engender blessings for ourselves and others.
Ayya Medhanandi: Where the Flame of Truth Burns Bright 19.06.2021 25:58
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Dhamma is like mother, father, guardian, the Truth that we can rest in. So rest in the purity of one moment. Offering to listen, what is the message we receive? In the silence of the mind, what do we hear? If there is no silence we listen more intently and dive more deeply. Where there is no past, no future, nothing to run away from, nothing to run towards, we stop to tru...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Teacher is Present – Vesak Joy and Dhamma Refuge 15.05.2021 54:25
(Indonesian Buddhist Fellowship of Canada) To celebrate the Buddha’s life is to be his disciple in enlightenment. Every day becomes a day of Vesak when we emulate the Buddha’s virtues and follow his gradual training in Dhamma-Vinaya and spiritual warriorship. We vow to purify the mind, realize the vision of Dhamma, and practice perfect compassion for all living beings. At last we find the teacher...
Ayya Medhanandi: Food for Awakening 02.04.2021 22:20
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Peace, patience, and practice ripen with the quality of faith. We trust the teacher on a path distinguished by compassion and a diet for awakening the heart. “All suffering arises when we think about our own happiness. And all happiness arises when we think about the well-being of others.” So we forsake harm to free ourselves from selfishness. Learning to understand and k...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Buddha Was Right 01.04.2021 18:13
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) As seekers of truth, we turn the wheel of Dhamma inwardly. There alone can we understand the mind’s purity and directly know the true rhythm of the heart, undiluted by worldly refrains. The sounds of the world can turn coarse and invasive until we listen to the silence in our interior depths. Secluded from life's relentless currents, we traverse the ‘cloud of...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Value of Death 03.01.2021 25:53
(Portland Friends of the Dhamma) This path takes us to our true home through cultivating sanctity, and understanding the value of death: the death of greed, hatred and delusion. When we see all things as impermanent, death gives definition to our life. It delimits our experience. That’s how we learn how to love – because if things were permanent, we wouldn’t know the meaning of love. We would not...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Nimitta of Suffering 03.01.2021 31:53
(Portland Friends of the Dhamma) When we’re out of balance, it's due to the worldly winds. Even if you call them Dhamma winds, they end up being worldly - as soon as we grasp them, we’re back in samsara and we’re circling. The ending of circling always begins within us. It doesn’t end out there. Even if the balance of Dhamma out there is perfect, that moment of perfection is impermanent. Once we t...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Basis for Our Happiness 03.01.2021 4:41
(Portland Friends of the Dhamma) Take refuge and commit to ethical precepts to deepen the purification of virtue within us. This is the basis for true happiness. We take refuge in enlightened wisdom, and in our ability to awaken. We have faith that we can realize that Truth by ourselves – in this life; and we trust in this timeless teaching, worthy of our effort, worthy of our attention, worthy of...
Ayya Medhanandi: No Going Back 18.12.2020 29:27
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) On a wilderness trail, at times the path is clear, at times not. We get lost, confused, and disheartened. Tested again and again, we gain strength, skill, and clarity, and we learn to see what we could not see at first. The spiritual way is not a trail under our feet but a daunting passage of the heart. Once our view is purified, we know there is no going back. Perseverin...
Ayya Medhanandi: Love Everyone Or Die 13.12.2020 24:23
(Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community (TBC)) We may speak of or feel that we know about death but until we truly contemplate, approach and move into death, what do we know? This is a tale about looking into the eye of a tortoise shell butterfly while it lay dying on the shrine. Straining as it reached up towards us waving its frail antennae when it heard our chanting, we felt at one even with this...
Ayya Medhanandi: Contemplation: A Special Friend of Mindfulness 17.10.2020 16:58
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Practice deepens when we are present here and now, able to intuitively understand and contemplate our experience rather than knowing it through concepts. We refine mindfulness with wisdom, receive the moment humbly and offer our full attention and devotion to know what is before us. When Truth rushes in, we forgive more and we grieve less.
Ayya Medhanandi: Mind Like A Satellite - Respect, Extraordinary Mindfulness and Wisdom 17.10.2020 38:29
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) A mind weeded of impurities is a field of stillness and wisdom where our suffering melts away. How does this happen? We study the mind and apply four facets of an extraordinary proactive mindfulness: exerted effort, penetrating focus on the object of awareness, heroic diligence, and contemplative devotion. In the silence of the undistracted mind, wisdom and a true and sus...
Ayya Medhanandi: In Our Own LIfeboat 17.10.2020 14:08
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Intuitive knowing is the lens that connects us to the heart through our meditation. Leave the world behind and tap into that energy to enter the realm of pure receptivity, not known through the senses but fully known in complete Awareness that is a safe and liberating refuge. It leads us inward, beyond all wanting, to the ending of suffering, to an emptiness that surpasse...
Ayya Medhanandi: This Is Where the Mind is Liberated 16.10.2020 30:02
(Ottawa Buddhist Society) Human beings have that special ability to deeply see and fathom things as they truly are. But we are so impatient. We resist letting go. Clinging, we harm unknowingly and stray from truth, gaining no peace. How can we recover and free ourselves from fear, anger, and mental distress? Purify the mind and directly know the larger truth of impermanence. See blessings where th...
Ayya Medhanandi: When No Season is Too Much 27.09.2020 30:15
(Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community (TBC)) Sidelined by COVID, we are compelled to look at ourselves, at each other, at the world caught in pandemic restrictions we never imagined were possible. Besieged by fear and vulnerability, beings lack insight into the truth of things find no safe refuge. The time is ripe for waking up to gain freedom from the eight worldly winds and abide in higher state...
Ayya Medhanandi: Metta, Mantra, Addiction, Recovery: Three Questions 22.08.2020 21:39
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) We are braver than we know and can endure more than we realize if there is a readiness to renounce and be creative. Learn to refine, adapt, repeat teachings until they are embodied, and deeply listen to all that life offers. Reaching out to others according to our skills and strength, connect and offer guidance if it is welcome. Compassion born of growing wisd...
Ayya Medhanandi: In the Stream of the Noble Ones 21.08.2020 32:00
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) Think of yourself as a spiritual warrior. What is the danger at hand? What is our true protection? Where is safety? Be ever aware. Staying close to the Dhamma, we will inevitably grow close to the Buddha. We shall uphold virtue foremost through wholesome friendships, purify intention, action, and speech, at rest or work or during mental cultivation, and embody...
Ayya Medhanandi: Empty the Basket 21.08.2020 15:10
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) Let us hone our expertise to witness the charade of gain and loss arising each moment. Seeing the eight worldly winds, impermanent, not giving in when the mind perches in 'self', purify wrong view, empty the basket, and begin here where we are, balanced, the Middle Way.
Ayya Medhanandi: A Safe Domain: How the Quail Escaped a Hawk 20.08.2020 27:01
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) The contemplative path of purifying the mind is the most important journey of all - inward. Just as the little quail that tricked a hawk, we no longer fall prey to the 'maras' of the world, safe in our proper ancestral domain of virtue. Therein, the heart of generosity is further refined into qualities of joy, selflessness, compassion and wisdom, thus benefiti...
Ayya Medhanandi: The Inner Stopping 19.08.2020 26:54
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) Wherever we go the mind does not remain happy - unless we fully awaken. How can we end the restless tides and remain inwardly stable, content within ourselves like the well-hewn wheel that stood still when it stopped rolling and did not fall down? Purifying our bodily acts, speech, and mind in the Buddha's gradual training, we go beyond the eight worldly winds...
Ayya Medhanandi: Into the Quiet 19.08.2020 21:28
(Satipanna Insight Meditation (SIMT)) We go forth into the quiet of the heart, distant from the world, to glimpse the Unconditioned. We are alone but we are as if with all beings. There is no 'one' who wakes up, there is just awakening. It is freeing and it's free - but it will cost us absolutely everything. We give up everything but there is nothing to give up. And we gain the understanding of th...
