Dear Lord, as we gather in awe and wonder to celebrate the birth of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, we worship and praise you for your goodness toward us. In the Fourth Sunday in Advent Reading (Matthew 1:18-25) we hear: “Mary will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins” (verse 21). Being judged by ourselves, others, and God bothers us. What does Jesus’ have to say about judgment in His final words in His final public Sermon in the Gospel of John? And what do Jesus’ words tell us about this world and about ourselves?

Jesus says, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in the darkness.” Jesus is saying, “Unless you have Me you’re in darkness. He isn’t saying that you might fall into darkness if you don’t have Him. He’s saying that everybody in this world is in darkness, and He’s the only light!
