It may not be a supervisor's job to find passion at work for their direct reports, but they still have plenty of work to do to keep their team motivated and together. It takes a lot of communication because none of us are adept at reading minds (I assume). It's both difficult and rewarding to dig a little deeper and talk about the things that inspire and motivate us for a great work experience!

It's easy for aquarium and zoo professionals to say that their passion is animals. Often, that's not quite accurate. Sometimes, your passions in life change. What do you do when that happens? How can you stay motivated and fulfilled?

Animal training is a useful tool to enhance animal welfare and make care easier for the animals as well as the staff. Doing so in a positive way helps keepers monitor health closely and engages the animals (if they choose to participate). Less stress for everyone! Why don't we practice the same care and observation with people, too?

The professional animal care world is quite aware of the dangers posed by illness transfer between animals and humans. The world's most infamous zoonosis case, COVID-19, poses all new dangers! We'll have to be more careful... for ourselves as well as the animals!

We're all learning as we go. There's no doubt that this is going to change how we prepare for a crisis. If you're curious as to what's happening with your local aquarium or zoo while we're all closed to the public, look no further! We're still here, still working, trying to get through all of this just like everyone else!

I know I talk a lot about "the average zoo or aquarium," but what does that really mean? I'm speaking of the group that falls under the highest standards in the land, those being the ones that are accredited members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, or the AZA.  What standards are we talking about here? Why would a facility or individual want to be a member? Who cares? I've got a quick run...

There's a lot happening in the world these days, but some jobs still keep going despite worldwide challenges. There are good practices to keep in mind while at home, just in case the situation continues to change!

When I tell someone what I do, they look at me in a confused fashion and repeat, "yeah... but what do you DO?" Well here's the quick breakdown of my average day. It's probably not as glamorous as many might assume, but it can get very... interesting. Feast your ear holes, kids! It's a day in the life of an aquarist!
