This week’s passage from Hebrews 13 continues to lay out exhortation for believers. Throughout the text we are inundated with numerous practical applications of our faith.

Last week’s passage of scripture ended with a sobering reminder - that our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29) In light of the awesomeness of our God, the author of Hebrews commences chapter 13 by listing several very practical ways in which believers may offer acceptable worship.

Using the numerous examples of faith in Hebrews 11, this week’s passage offers practical guidance and encouragement for believers so that we too may live a remarkable life of faith. Using the analogy of running a long-distance race, the author of Hebrews implores us to keep our eyes on the prize as we run with endurance.

This week’s passage is chalk-full of rich imagery. First, the author uses the scary imagery of Mount Sinai (representing the Law) to contrast the festive picture of Mount Zion, the city of God (representing the Kingdom of God). Jesus became human, endured frailty and weakness, weathered temptations, and suffered during His time in the flesh. Because Jesus has personally experienced all this, he is sympathetic and compassionate toward us. However, Jesus never gave into temptation and knew no sin. Therefore, he has become our perfect, eternal High Priest, and has become the source of salvation for all who obey him.

Like last week, this week’s passage uses excerpts from Psalm 95 as it challenges us to respond to God’s invitation into His rest. The author stresses that “today” is the right day for us to listen and respond to the Word of God. Simply hearing is not enough, we must also believe to be saved and share in God’s rest.
