OK, so one challenge we've disk-covered (ha) doing floppy interfacing is that you need to really power them right. The power connector is a keyed 2.5mm pitch right angle PCB mount part (a Berg Connector https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berg_connector). Let's find a connector on Digi-Key we can use in our design! The week between Christmas and New Years is usually a time when we get to play with some new technology since a lot of people are out and many meetings are postponed. but this year we played with some *old* technology! we tried hooking up a 3.5" floppy drive to a microcontroller to see if we can read data from it. we learned a lot about floppy interfacing and also made a library that will connect...

whew! so, turns out it was an underspec'ed power supply. so now we know, 500mA is not enough for a floppy drive you really need 1A. but with that out of the way, we were able to cleanly read all 160 tracks of flux from a floppy disk! this particular disk is one that our friend hid in that place that one time, and we've been waiting to be able to see what's on it... will we be able to extract the s...

we fixed some track seeking code errors we had, and now we're able to start getting data from greaseweazle. since the diskette we've got is an ibm pc 1.44MB format we can use the built in ibm pc MFM format decoding module. the good news is that its able to decode *some* tracks...but its not able to decode all of them, like it'll read 10 good sectors in a row, then just cant find any sectors at all...

we're going to back up a little in this part - we have MFM and index pulse data coming out of our chonky panasonic 3.5" floppy drive and capturing that well. but now we're a little curious of how folks are going to use this if floppy drives arent available. we had to pay a pretty penny for this drive, second hand, and that makes it tougher for more folks to get drives and use them to read floppies...

OK so part 1 we got our wiring worked out and found an index pulse. Part 2 is we started getting MFM data coming out. Now we're capturing pulses with gpio bitbanging, and storing all the pulse widths in a large memory array. each track has a 500Khz signal, and outputs data every 5 Hz, so we have a max of 100K samples worst case. since we're using a cortex arm with 192K~256K of RAM (the RP2040 has...
