What people admire, crave, or will often do anything to get -- power and authority -- are empty and ultimately dangerous. Jesus brings the right perspective on these things and shows us that what's truly important is the greatest virtue of all: humility.

Pride leads to divisiveness, and it also causes us to think we're better than others. This attitude is dangerous, and it's destructive! Jesus had to deal with this attitude in His disciples before they went out to represent Him. It was another convicting lesson, but they were better off for it. We will be as well, if we obey Him.

Jesus never promised to make our faith easy or comfortable. This brief passage makes this clear. He tells us things we may not like, or initially understand -- but if our heart is right before Him He'll give us the grace we need to know and obey Him.  But if we don't guard our hearts, we will miss out on the most important words we will ever hear: God speaking to us and with us!

In this passage, Luke gives us an important lesson on why the disciples failed to cast a demon out of a boy -- even after they had already cast out demons from others. What happened? Are there lessons here for us?
