Talk to your parents.  Get to them.  Learn who they were.  Tall to your child. Share stories of who you are.  Let them learn who you are and let them get to know you.  Not as a parent, but as a person.

When they tell you who they are, it's time to follow.  Teach them to lead by following.  Communicate to them they are building a foundation.  Explain what this means.  Enforce their choice for self.  Help build that autonomy and confidence, by stepping back.  Then do what they are telling you they want you to do.
