On this first Sunday after Christmas, we had our first Family Sunday. The kids stayed in the main service with us and so there are two half-sermons here. On this second week of Advent, we consider how we as Christians can dare to hope in Christ in a world of cynicism. We can be a church of harmony and hope rather than cynicism and despair. Moses comes to the close of his great exhortation to Israel to "choose life and good, not death and evil." We are similarly called to abandon all those things which is full of death and to choose instead the things of God, which are Life and Good. Pastor Jeff walks us through Deuteronomy 23:15-25 and the commands that guide us through how to manage debt and the loaning of money. We discover that in our everyday lives, God has called us to display the dignity of the Name of God that has been given to us by our being created in his image.

We often have to skip passages as we preach and I (Pastor Jeff) wanted to offer some reflections on Deuteronomy 15. We discuss debt and the way it was imagined in Deuteronomy and what that would have meant for our Christian lives.

Pastor Cody leads us further into Deuteronomy with a reflection on the overlapping of the ages: the Passover of the Lord which Israel celebrated that also became the Lord's Supper which we continue to celebrate every week.
