In this episode we look at the resurrection of Jesus, and how this is not a conspiracy theory but a historical event. Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook: @theopengatechurch Instagram: @theopengatechurch

In this episode we look at how the Apostle's Creed makes the point to emphasize that Jesus died a real, bodily death such as all people face because of our sins.  We reflect on what Jesus accomplished on the Cross as a sacrifice for sin (showing the depth of the love of God for his fallen creation, satisfying the justice of God on our behalf and breaking the power of sin, Satan, and death). ...

In this episode we look at how suffering enetered the human condition as a result of our sinful rebellion against God, but God understands and has offered us a way out through Jesus. Jesus has experienced our sufferings, understands our sorrows, and is able to sympathize with our weakness. On earth, the Son shared physically, emotionally and spiritually in the temptations and sufferings common to...

In this episode we look at how, at the moment of Jesus' immaculate conception, the divine nature of the one eternal Person of the Son was united to our human nature.  Therefore, Jesus Christ is fully and truly both divine and human, but without sin. His two natures are united without division, separation, mixture or change.  This means that all Jesus does as God so that His human words and de...

In this episode Pastor Jonathan focuses on what it actually means when we call Jesus Christ: "Lord". While Christianity may have differing beliefs or traditions across denominations and people, affirming Jesus Christ as Lord is the unifying proclamation that we agree upon.  In today's culture, it's subversive for us to confess Jesus as the Lord of our lives both in public and i...

We are joined this week by The Very Reverend Paul Donison, who gives us insight as to how we should pray during times of crisis and that cooperating with God, especially in those times, will show us when to act, when to wait and always to trust in Him. In this episode we continue to look at The Apostle's Creed. We focus on Jesus as an equal, eternal member of the trinity as the Son of God. While there are many things we can agree to disagree on, the divinity of Jesus is something that our faith hinges upon. Being clear on who Jesus is also enables us to answer questions that others may have in regards to His role in creation.  Connect with...

In this episode we continue looking at the declarations in The Apostle's Creed and focus on the scriptures Genesis 1:1 - 2:3 and John 1: 1-5.  We focus on God the Creator while we explore the perceived conflict between good science and Christianity and how the two are actually good allies. In this episode we continue exploring the Apostle's Creed. The first line declares our belief in God, the Father Almighty. This is a declaration of reverence and endearment, that we are made in His image and are no longer slaves, but family. We trust God as our heavenly Father who is our protector and provider.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook: @theopengatechurch Instagram: @t...

In this episode, we will be taking a look at how our journey through Romans has been a reminder that we are saved by grace through faith ! Remembering that we often follow the sermon with our statement of faith, the creed, we begin a series taking a look through the creed. What it is we are saying and why.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook: @theopengatechurch Instagram: @theopengate...

In this episode, Pastor Jonathan focuses on Romans 12: 1-8 and the challenge set by Paul to assess ourselves realistically and not more highly than we in fact are. We are all given gifts by God to be used in His service and in serving the church body, but we also acknowledge that He doesn't actually need us to accomplish His plans and purposes.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook...

In this episode, we are joined by the Reverend Andy Withrow who illuminates Acts 12 for us and presents the challenge it makes to us as the church and as individuals for the role of fervent and earnest prayer and 4 things that happen when we pray. In this episode we are joined by the Rev. Lynne Ellis, who preaches on the remarkable transformation of Saul and how God wants us to be truly obedient and in alignment with his ways so we can use the gifts he's given us to build up the Church and lead others to Jesus. In this episode we are joined by the Rev. Dr. Rod Ellis. This encouraging message looks at how Jesus takes the ordinary and turns it into extra-ordinary. If we are open and faithful, Jesus will put together the people, the place and time for his will to be accomplished. We may feel insignificant and unworthy, but he has a plan for all of us if we're willing to take one step at a time in faith...

In this episode we look at Romans 8: 26-34 and the question of whether our choices matter or if our lives were already predestined to turn out a certain way. God has a good plan for our lives and we can trust him.  We can't just sit on the couch waiting for God to throw his plan in our lap though. We make choices and these choices do matter and they do have consequences. When we hear the gosp...

This episode focuses on the assurance of future hope we have, that the ultimate glory we will receive is so enormous that the sufferings of this present time are insignificant in comparison. We look forward to both the resurrection of the body and to the new heaven and new earth. And so, God's people and God's creation long for this day.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook:...

In this episode we focus on Romans 8: 7-17, and the question, "how do we know if we have received the Holy Spirit?". We know we are set free from the slavery of  sin through Jesus, but we may question our status or if our salvation has truly taken hold. The good news is that the gift of the Holy Spirit is not orchestrated by ourselves but is given by God alone. The fire of the Spirit can...

It's still quite common, even prevalent today, that people think the spirit and the flesh are two different separate opposing natures within a person, with two different separate opposing values as well as degrees of righteousness.  In this episode we look to how scripture answers this and the question, "Is My Body Evil?" In this episode we focus on Romans 6: 1-11 and Paul's question:  "Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?" Paul answers that we have died to our sinful self and been raised with Christ into a new life and that Christians must realize that the mastery of sin has been broken over our lives. In this episode we focus on Romans 5:15-19, how what God has done in the one man Jesus, is far more than simply putting the human race back where it was before the arrival of sin; the 'trespass' and the 'gift' are not equal and opposite. Paul contrasts Adam and Jesus in this passage and shows us that the deal we have received is too good to pass up. Connect with Us! www.opengat...

This week we are joined by the Reverend Deborah Mayo of Street Hope Ministries and Church Of Our Lord in Victoria, BC. In this episode we focus on Romans 5: 1-11 and the question of whether we are truly saved by Jesus and how we can trust in that promise.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook: @theopengatechurch Instagram: @theopengatechurch

As we continue through the book of Romans, we look at how our salvation is not dependent on our performance but on faith in Jesus alone. How we are all part of God's family, equal and forgiven by the grace of God.  Connect with Us! www.opengatechurch.ca Facebook: @theopengatechurch Instagram: @theopengatechurch

In this episode we begin a journey through the book of Romans, where Paul addresses the church in Rome.  Jesus's work on the cross demonstrates God's righteousness, because through the cross, God's justice and mercy are reconciled. They're no longer at odds with each other. This is the heart of the Christian faith. That at the cross, God's justice and love meet. And becaus...
