The Undead Symphony

Send us Fan Mail It was blasted for being misogynistic, basic, unoriginal,  stealing from Shaun of the Dead, and a poor competitor when compared to Lesbian Vampire Killers (seriously?  with James fucking Corden), but some class this the 2009 Doghouse Danny Dyer, Noel Clarke, Stephen Graham and Lee Ingleby as a guilty pleasure and one of their go to horror comedies.  Is it original? No.  Is it miso...

Send us Fan Mail I don't know where to start. Small mercies? The movie isn't long. Conceptually? It is a funny premise. The Church of Scientology are trying to remove all other religions by creating tailored viruses that turn the believers into unkillable zombies. Their weakness? The things they weren't allowed to do in life due to their faith? That whole Mormons not swearing, no ca...

Send us Fan Mail The second half of the cancelled Netflix Ferris Beuller meets TWD The World Beyond, a young adult post apocalyptic zombie show that is as much Lord of the Flies as it is Dawn of the Dead. Actually scratch all that, it nothing like any of those. It can't compare. It has none of the depth. But what it does have is witty banter, great characters, and fun. It isn't 28 Days L...

Send us Fan Mail "Viral," a 2016 sci-fi thriller directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, follows the story of two sisters navigating a world consumed by a mysterious outbreak.  The film delves into the complexities of sisterhood against the backdrop of a viral epidemic that transforms humans into aggressive creatures. Send us Fan Mail In this episode we are joined by Hannah from over at Hordes of Horror for a fun Japanese live action adaptation of the Kengo Hanazawa manga I am a Hero starring Yo Oizumi as Hideo Suzuki or Hero. The put-upon, down-on-his-luck manga associate producer has a shotgun license, and a girl friend who has had enough of his day dreaming. But when the ZQN virus decimates his city, turning...

Send us Fan Mail The Children (also known as The Children of Ravensback) is a 1980 American horror film, directed by Max Kalmanowicz, and starring Martin Shakar from Saturday night fever, and the chuck Norris action movie, like he does anything else, Invasion USA, leave it to beaver’s Gil Rogers, and the multitalented grammy award winning singer songwriter and author, Gale Garnett.  It follows a g...

Send us Fan Mail Hot on the heels of Live Escape is Live Survival that takes place literally after the first movie with all the same elements - cops, head/vest cams, not using weapons, contradiction, slow pace stilted dialog.   There are issues with this one. The story does not progress. The slow moving around a maze like location continues. We gain a total douche canoe in Miguel and a constant sc...

Send us Fan Mail A new theme on the found footage horror genre, this is supposedly, but clearly not as we get time updates, a real-time footage horror movie. Written by, directed by and starring Joe Lujan as Pete, with Bryant Smith as his partner Jensen, two cops (bad boys bad boys whatcha gonna do?) are called to a homeless shelter after the discovery of a body. IMDB gave it 2.9 and I can see why...

Send us Fan Mail In this episode I watch Return of the Living Dead 2 and 3 for the first time.  In, ROTLD2, the comedic horror sequel to the 1985 cult classic starring one of my first crushes Linnea Quigley, we follow Jesse, a headstrong little spitfuck of a kid, bullied by Billy and Johnny, and his sister Lucy, but somehow focused on saving the town with the Cable Guy from the hoard of Trioxin zo...

Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Undead Symphony in which we unravel cinematic gems . In the 113th episode, Michael and I dissect the 2000 Japanese zombie flick, "Junk." And it's name is very apt.   Whilst it was suggested that we immerse ourselves in a thrilling blend of horror and action as we explore the film's unique take on the undead genre, Michael and I we...

Send us Fan Mail Indonesia 2019 (our 30th country covered) - high schooler Deon (Jeff Smith) lives with his mother, who suffers from early onset Alzheimer's. His estranged father is a scientist working for the government. A waterborne parasite starts turning people into zombies or Zetas, with two variants and we see Deon head home from school and attempt to survive the zombie outbreak with a...

Send us Fan Mail "Night of Something Strange" is a horror-"comedy" film that plunges its audience into a nightmarish and hilariously grotesque adventure. The story unfolds as a group of friends embark on a road trip, only to encounter a mysterious and deadly STD that turns its victims into sexually ravenous and far too rapey zombies.  As the night progresses, the group faces in...

Send us Fan Mail "Wild Zero" is a rock'n'roll explosion of hilarity and zombie mayhem. Picture this: Alien invaders, rockabilly rebels, and the undead collide in a Japanese chaos-fest. Ace, a wannabe rockstar, finds himself battling not only extraterrestrial threats but also a zombie apocalypse. As chaos reigns, his only hope lies in the power of rock music and the love for his...

Send us Fan Mail Oh this one is solely on me. I thought I would be smart and create a simple juxtaposition between the fluffy bunny rabbits K-Drama Happiness and The Sadness, a gore ridden Taiwanese splatterfest.  So it is my fault that I had to watch 13 hour of Happiness, getting progressively more and more incensed with the societal aspects of the show, and the annoying haves  (Mr Oh Ju, the wan...

Send us Fan Mail He was here for our 80th episode to review the first season of Fear the Walking Dead and he is back again. As he sits next to Michael at work there is no escaping the torrent of film recommendations and this one he paid attention to and watched, not once, but 3 times, it is the Train to Busan, a riveting South Korean zombie apocalypse film directed by Yeon Sang-ho, released in 201...

Send us Fan Mail All the stats from the year, thoughts, and a recap of the movies we watched. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from us at the Undead Symphony, and we hope to catch up with you in 2024

Send us Fan Mail A festive episode with music and mayhem, jokes, japes, Jesus, and Johnny Z, an absolute shit kicker of a movie. It was bad on so many levels it took two attempts to record the preamble let alone watch it. A half-man half-zombie Johnny Z escapes a lab and is trained by JonRay a martial artist zombie hunter mourning the death of his son. It could be a good Adult Swim Metalocalypse s...

Send us Fan Mail In this festive episode we watch and review one of only two festively themed zombie movies we can think of "Stalled" (the other being Anna and the Apocalypse), both British, with this one part of a three movie DVD boxed set along with the NZ movie starring friend of the podcast Harley Neville, I Survived a Zombie Holocaust, and the Australian Me and My vs The Zombie Apoc...

Send us Fan Mail Bill Moseley as a shock jock (recently we saw him in Exit Humanity alongside a shock jock from a very similar zombie movie Pontypool, Stephen McHattie), Patricia Tallman (Barbara in the Tom Savini remake of Night of the Living Dead where Moseley played her brother Johnny - they're coming to get you Bar-ba-ra) as his ex-wife and producer at the radio station. Directed by LA La...

Send us Fan Mail This week, to start the new season, Michael and I are comparing old to new. Fair? Maybe not, but it is our show and it seemed a reasonable enough premise. And so a real-time game of Virus or Voodoo as we watch the 1932 Bela Lagosi "classic" White Zombie and the 2023 Herd. Back in the black and white days of cinema men were real men, women were real women, and zombies wer...

Send us Fan Mail This movie doesn't have a wikipedia page, a bad sign. It is supposed to be a comedy but that would involve it having some jokes that are funny. It has a few jokes, typical sophomoric nonsense, but no laughs. In fact the funniest thing about this movie is that when you Google Dug Up Movie you get images from the Pixar movie Up of the golden retriever named  Dug. It tells the s...

Send us Fan Mail For our 100th Episode we have sausages under the grill, pork stew on the stove and input from Janine Pipe, author of Sausages - the making of Dog Soldiers, and pal of Neil Marshall, the writer/director of one of both of our favourite British horror movies the 2002 Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd and Liam Cunningham Dog Soldiers. Yes, we are branching out, and not the branch that Bruce...
