ShouJoe

This week we start a brand new show. We attempt to reintroduce ourselves but find that our lives are kind of boring right now. Hm, maybe it’s just the changing of the seasons… And speaking of change, in HanaKimi our protagonist Mizuki decides to move to Japan and go undercover to attend an all-boys school and for her totally-not-romantic admiration of high jump star Izumi Sano. Or maybe I should s...

Content Warning: Sexual Assault & Abuse We finish off out Utena watching with the 1999 movie! And speaking of movies, Joe has finally watched Project Hail Mary and had a good time with that! Meanwhile Sarah has started running again. Then we grapple with the Adolescence of Utena. The hair, the hair! So different! Also, more ghosts?? And, wait, what’s that noise in the distance? It sounds like…...

This week we revolutionaize the world. But first, Joe makes Sarah learn facts about Star Fox and complains about realistic looking animals. Sarah thrills with her allergy test results and excitement for Love Island's return. In Utena, we have the final duel called Revolution! Utena and Anthy finally talk to one another and we learn all about how much Akio sucks. Also there’s a duel but that’s pret...

This week we gain the power of revolution! But first, Joe recaps his adventure to Chicago and Sarah retracts a proclamation. In Utena, we get some long awaited backstory. That’s right, the Kashira shadow troupe take the main stage! Then we finish off our duels with a re-rematch with Touga as he tries to prove he’s more than just a pretty face.

This week Nanami tries to climb the ladder. In our real lives, Sarah has gotten a new puppy to add to the litter, while Joe has watched some less well known cartoon movies. Big stuff! In Utena, Nanami learns that family is not all that it’s cracked up to be. She stays with Utena, Anthy, and Akio, which is a terrible idea. And tries to run away but barely misses the mark. Then we get a part recap-p...

This week we blow out our candles. In reality, Joe has watched the Lion King and Sarah visited a horror themed bar and performed live band karaoke. In Utena, we get a new guy who stays around for a total of two episodes. We all love a new guy! Except Juri, who hates this him and is totally justified in doing so. Then Utena and Akio share some time together and we work through our feelings on that...

This week it’s apocalypse time! But first, Joe and Sarah talk about our lives. Joe has watched more of live-action one piece and is not impressed, while Sarah has started Love if Blind and doesn’t think she’d do well on that show. In Utena, we begin a new arc. New montages, new sequences, new cars! Hurray! We get back to the duels and deal with Saionji and Miki this week. Then we end on a goofy eg...

This week we cap off the black rose saga. But first, Joe recounts his experience watching Eraserhead and Sarah talks about sorting her extensive manga collection. In Utena, we finish the black rose saga and try to figure out what the heck is going on. We only partially succeed. Then we get a nice clip show episode to round us out. Next week, it’s Apocalypse time!

Check us out on the MangaTak podcast! The week characters emerge from the background. But first, in the real world Joe has decided to learn about Capital (the horror!), while Sarah has finished all of Survivor and is fairly disappointed in the 50th season. In Utena, we check in on Wakaba and see how things are going for her. They are…not great. Unfortunately Saionji somehow weasles himself back in...

We hit the midway point this week. In the real world, Joe has begun a new gundam series and Sarah has retreated back indoors for now. Some things never change. In Utena, we get a return to gag episodes with the cowbell of happiness. Then we jump right back into drama as we revisit Juri’s whole deal and see if we make any progress there (we don’t). Then we check in with our favorite elementary scho...

The vibes shift this week. But first, we talk about our lives! Joe has finished Turn A Gundam and had a great time with it, while Sarah has started listening to Business Wars. In Utena, we kick off the second saga with a brief recap, then we meet the family as we are introduced to Anthy’s brother Akio. We also get an idea of what the black rose means and it turns out it’s a secret society?? Gasp!...

This week we finish off the student council saga! But first, Sarah and Joe catch up on what they’ve been doing. Joe watched the 2025 Japanese movie Kokuho and had a pretty good time. Sarah has voluntarily lounged outside for the first time in forever. Maybe winter truly is over! In Utena, we round out the student council saga with a quick duel from Nanami and her, uh, upsetting past. Then we get a...

We return this week with our 100th episode! Wow! That’s a lot of podcasting! We celebrate our 100th episode by completely forgetting about it and instead Joe talks about making a sandwich and Sarah talks about the upcoming season of Survivor. Then in Revolutionary Girl Utena it’s time to meet Juri and her tragic backstory that for once, correctly does a love triangle. You love to see it. Then Uten...

Happy Year of the Horse everyone! We’re riding up on episode 99 this week. So close to landmark 100! Joe discusses his new roommate and lunar new year’s party while Sarah talks about adult sleep overs and running in jeans. In Utena, Mickey and Utena face off. We learn that Mickey has a lot of ideas about things that may or may not be true. Then Nanami decides to protect herself from wild animals b...

Its back to school life for Utena in our latest episodes. But in the real world, we catch up and talk about our various goings-ons. In Revolutionary Girl Utena it’s time to party! Anthy gets nominated to be dance queen and becomes friends with Nanami, sure hope that goes well for her! Meanwhile utena gets more quality time with Touga because her memory is worse than we expected. Then we meet the r...

Then we start Revolutionary Girl Utena with episode 1 and 2. Our hero Utena is a simple middle school girl. She goes to class, hangs out with her friend, gets involved in duels, climbs a million stairs...

This week we say goodbye to Miyo and the gang until the season 3 specials. In real life Joe is cat sitting for his GF and learns the dangers of letting a cat physically sit on you. Meanwhile, Sarah has been hanging out and watching some horror movies. Then we talk about American animation studios for a solid ten minutes, as one does. Then we finish off My Happy Marriage, we wrap up the Naoshi arc...

As we approach the end of my happy marriage we ask ourselves, are they ever going to get married?? IRL Joe is prescribed to be a Corolla driver forever and Sarah is dangerously close to finishing all of Survivor. In my happy marriage we learn some Naoshi backstory which really changes Joe’s mind about a few things. Fortunately, Miyo has decided to be a woman of action and hatches a plan to save ki...

We begin to close in on the end of season 2. But first, Joe recounts his ski trips and Sarah updates us on her survivor re-watch progress. Then we talk about anime a little bit and how meaningful genre distinctions are in reality. Then in My Happy Marriage, Miyo gets put in the witness protection program and she must stay at the Royal Palace?? What?? That’s right, it’s two episodes of hanging out...

We hit the halfway point this week! And speaking of hits, Joe tells us about his new car problems and Sarah remembers her car trauma. Boo cars, we don’t like. In my happy marriage, we speedrun our way through the plot. We learn some troubling news about Miyo’s new bestie that caps off in some pretty cool fighting. The illusion guy does some illusions. As one does.

Happy new year everyone! IRL we go over our holiday events and plans as we round out 2025. Here’s to another year with the ShouJoe pod! In my happy marriage, we’ve got more parents. The B plot becomes the A plot and we get a new bi-specticaled baddy. Then Milo gets a new friend and we learn that being a woman in the army isn’t so great.

This week we prep for the holidays. We go over our Christmas prep plans and dicuss a bunch of other stuff that isn’t related to that. Also video games. In My Happy Marriage, we meet the parents! It’s season 2 and Miyo has a new problematic parent to deal with, while Kiyoka has a new forest adventure. The vibes are better and we’re ready to dig in.

Happy holidays everyone! Sarah and Joe decided to celebrate by watching the Star Wars Holiday Special. Days later, it’s still unclear to me why we did this to ourselves. Why did we watch Chewbacca’s dad imagine a sexy lady singing to him? Why did Princess Leia sing a song to the main theme tune? Why was GM running the equivalent of campaign ads in 1978? Absolutely nothing makes sense in this speci...

This week we finish My Happy Marriage Season 1. In our real lives, we adjust to getting back to weekly recordings by talking about what really matters, video games. We talk about some of the latest and somewhat off-putting game trailers from the video game awards and then we talk about what we’re currently watching and playing. We even talk a bit about anime. Imagine that! In My Happy Marriage, we...

We near the end of season one this week. But first, Joe is back and talks about his time in Japan. Joe and Sarah gab about that and many more things. Lots to catch up on! In my happy marriage, we meet the other half of Miyo’s family and they are…uh…not much better! Kiyoka gets baited into a gentleman’s duel, but as we learned from the Rose of Versailles, never do those. Next time it’s the end of s...
