NW Passages-The Islands Call Part 1 Read by the author, Sandy Frykholm 15.07.2023 7:15
In current-day Seattle, Gino makes his money writing a phony astrology column and playing fortune teller for party entertainment. Sara, a fraud investigator, has visions of the future that always come true—and she’ll do anything to keep it a secret. Her clairvoyance has destroyed important relationships in her life. When they meet, Gino hopes they can be more than friends. Unfortunately, the most...

This is a mix of music featuring artists and songs with a PNW connection. I chose Alice in Chains twice on this show, as I found something interesting online this week. The song Ranier Fog was recorded almost 20 years after the death of the group's former lead singer, Layne Staley. Though the magic or creepiness of AI, someone added his vocals to that song. You can find the version here...
Interview with Dan Brubeck-Brubeck Brothers Quartet 08.07.2023 1:14:02
The Field Arts & Events Hall had its debut performance this week, the Brubeck Brothers Quarter, featuring two of the sons of a jazz pioneer, Dave Brubeck. This show includes excerpts of my interview with the very engaging Dan, along with a selection of the group's work. And I played a compare and contrast--the original version of the best selling jazz record of all time, Take Five by Da...

Summer is here in Sequim! This show included some CW songs with artists with a PNW connection, a nod to Canada Day, a shout out to my friends from Maple Valley where I played a song by their neighbor Brandi Carlile, and one of my favorites, Just Breathe, dedicated to my mom. She's breathing fine, by the way.
June 24, 2023 Notes by Northwest: Music in the Park Edition 25.06.2023 1:18:07
This show is dedicated to the artists featured at this summer's Music in the Park, mostly musicians from the Peninsula including favorites like Black Diamond Junction, Bread & Gravy, Buck Ellard and Jean Lemke. The first 40 minutes or so was not recorded (operator error) but I think you'll enjoy this nonetheless. Music in the Park features free concerts on Tuesday nights at Carri...

This was a mix from The Stooges with their cover of the Kingsmen's Louie Louie, to Mark Knopfler, checking the PNW box with a solo effort called Seattle. Also featured the Postal Service, who is back on tour now, and Death Cab for Cutie for my sweet niece, who is actually a fan (who knew?).
Notes by Northwest June 10, 2023 11.06.2023 1:58:33
The first part of the show featured covers of Woody Guthrie songs, including a new release by the Dropkick Murphys from Okemah Rising (Okemah being the hometown of Woody Guthrie). Also had original and cover of Cryin' Time by Buck Owens and Will Worden, and a Stevie Ray Vaughn cover of Hendrix and Hendrix' cover of All Along the Watchtower, originally by Bob Dylan. A protégé of Woody Gu...
May 27, 2023 Notes by NW 28.05.2023 1:57:37
I just listened to this show again, and really like the selections, ranging from a few covers of Woody Guthrie songs to Odo Abby, who is credited with bringing world music to the Pacific NW.
April 22, 2023 Notes by NW 01.05.2023 1:54:14
After a few ''operator errors" at the beginning of the show, it was smooth sailing of a mix of PNW music from the 1950s til today.
Notes by Northwest-April 29, 2023 30.04.2023 1:58:07
This was a true variety show, with Country Joe McDonald kicking it off with his version of Roll On Columbia, to some groups I haven't played a lot, like Asterhouse and Mudhoney.
Notes by NW: April 15, 2023 16.04.2023 1:58:32
We took a tour from early Woody Guthrie to some mellow sounds for the first hour, and then ramped it up a bit, ending with PJ and Nirvana, with selections from their 1993 releases Vs. and In Utero.
Notes by NW: April 8, 2023 09.04.2023 2:00:37
The first hour of the show was on the mellow side, including Burl Ives (Anacortes, WA); Louis Armstrong (from soundtrack to Sleepless in Seattle), and Bing Crosby singing about the iconic Black Ball Ferry line. The second half was louder, as we were commemorating three grunge milestones on April 5: the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994; the death of Alice in Chains Layne Staley on t...

A mixture of music with a PNW connection, a bit on the mellow side this time. And I'm continuing to feature songs from two iconic grunge albums released 30 years ago--Vs. by Pearl Jam, and In Utero by Nirvana. Cue the angst.
March 25, 2023: Notes x NW and Tribute Show to Aretha Franklin 26.03.2023 1:52:31
The first hour is a typical Notes by NW program, and the second hour was a tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, on what would have been her 81st birthday. And it was a celebration of the Diva Piano donation to KSQM radio. The Steinway piano was donated to Jennifer Hudson's foundation, and she commissioned it to be painted by some famous street artists to commemorate her role as Ar...
NW Passages Episode 21-Telemachus Part 1 19.03.2023 6:50
Telemachus, archetype of the boy left behind, is portrayed in this novel by Bobby Bacca, whose father, M.M.Bacca, the famous poet, has died. Bobby, an artist who has gone in search of his father’s past, revisits the Bacca legend through stories told by those who knew him best, while his own memories intersect with the effects of trauma pervading the adult lives of his contemporaries. It was writte...
