Kristýna Dočekalová and Lauren Sowers

Let's Chew the Fat

It's us, Lauren and Kristýna. We are international students studying in Madrid and we met on our first day of university. After two weeks of knowing each other and countless podcast-worthy conversations (obviously) we decided to start recording. We want to document our experience living abroad, facing the challenges of being a university student and the roller coaster that is life in your 20s. We hope these weekly episodes offer support, comfort or distraction to you. Music, emotions, books, culture shocks, studying, stress, insecurities, loneliness, independence – we cover it all.

#57 These are our thoughts on Daisy Jones & The Six (The Series) – includes A LOT of spoilers! 02.04.2023

We begin this episode like we do any other: By looking back at our past week. We both spent a good amount of the weekend working, enjoyed a Monday off (we still don't know why we didn't have university class) painting at the park, played padel, and went on a spontaneous train trip to a beautiful village outside of Madrid (Lauren's newest "highlight of her life"). So, all in a...

#56 What we've learned from studying abroad: confidence, independence, approaching people.. 26.03.2023

We had an amazing and eventful weekend! The main even was a school run (that Lauren refuses to call anything else than MARATHON) and it was so much fun! Kristyna managed to run those 5 kilometres as Lauren and her sister watched. During the week, we did a lot of sport activities like padel and a mini hike to the (geographical) centre of the Iberian Peninsula, which we had on our list for quite som...

#55 Answering your questions: homesickness, our languages, our friendship, etc. 19.03.2023

As always, we spend the first part of this episode talking about our week. We both spent the last weekend working (not very eventful) and then started the week with an amazing university class: we were told to bring our dogs along! Which was incredible – no further explanation needed. We also had a stressful Adobe inDesign assignment, had our very last cooking class (we got the credit!), Lauren&#3...

#54 We are obsessed with concerts and here's why 12.03.2023

Per usual, we start with recapping our week but lately we are having issues with remembering what we did during the weekend. Lauren went to get bagels and ice cream (!!!) and Kristýna went for a run after almost a year. Other than that, we didn't do a lot. And during the week, we had our second cooking class, a very busy Thursday; filming outside of university for our TV class and a bunch of o...

#53 Let's talk about the guilt that comes with moving away from home 05.03.2023

This episode starts off with a harmless weekly recap: It wasn't our best week. We were tired and things just felt off. But we did have our first vegan cooking class of this semester, which was a lot of fun and brought us a great dinner! And then for the main topic we decided to just dive right in and discuss the horrible feeling of guilt that we've experienced in connection to moving so fa...

#52 Do you also FEEL emotions this hard? 26.02.2023

Kristýna went to uni classes for a week and then took off again, this time to Tenerife with her mom. Lauren is a proper student and so she kept going to classes, where to her words “nothing great happened but also nothing awful happened”. Madrid is currently working on improving the cercanías train lines and so it creates a lot of traffic issues. So Kristýna and Lauren ranted about how annoying an...

#51 Interesting classes, but a lot of work: That's what we can expect this semester 19.02.2023

Sooo... this episode was a fun one to edit. We were both in a really good mood while recording: Kristyna was finally out of the difficult transition phase that comes moving back and forth between two countries and we'd both just enjoyed a sunny day at the park. We talk about our first BodyCross and Zumba classes (Lauren was really just thrown into it...) and look back at a week full of classes...

#50 It gets emotionally draining to keep going back and forth between countries 12.02.2023

Kristýna finally arrived to Madrid as well but before she left, she went to visit her grandparents, did some last minutes doctor’s appointments and spend the day of her flight with her sisters. Since the university classes already began, Lauren had a rough week (going to Spanish classes alone, without Kristýna made it even worse). But we went to an amazing concert of an Eurovision contestant Amand...

#49 Third semester recap 05.02.2023

In this episode, we catch each other up on our lives: What did we spend January doing? We talk about New Years, spending time with family and friends back home, coming back to Madrid for our Economics exam, a trip to Gran Canaria... and so on and so forth.  This has become a tradition: After every semester of our Journalism degree, we dedicate an episode to recapping the classes of the past months...

#48 BONUS: Part 2 - Another moving abroad story (Interview w/ a friend) 01.01.2023

First of all: HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope you had a nice time celebrating the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 last night. And we wish you all the best for this new year! We wanted to surprise you with this bonus episode: It's the second part of our conversation with a friend of ours who shared her own experience moving and living abroad with us. We're not gonna lie; this second part is a...

#47 Reading letters that we wrote to each other 25.12.2022

In our last week before going home, we managed to study, do a secret activity that Kristýna planned and nobody had any idea about, have an amazing Christmas dinner with our friend group and study some more. The days have gotten way longer and more draining but we’re almost there (at least that’s what we keep saying each other to not go crazy). Kristýna writes herself a letter every year and so we...

#46 Our goals & habits for the near future (NO New Year's resolutions please) 18.12.2022

We have not been doing much. Well, that’s a lie, we have been studying like crazy. It’s just that we have a pretty regular routine going on everyday and so it’s not as interesting. We did have one day though that was a bit different and we both enjoyed it very much. We needed to go to the centre to run some errands and we turned it into a date with ourselves, kind of. The year of 2022 is slowly (v...

#45 Another moving abroad story (Interview w/ a friend) 11.12.2022

A lot happened this past week: Lauren went on a work trip to Frankfurt, Kristyna had a very disappointing experiencing trying to go to the official lighting of the Christmas lights in Madrid, Lauren had a stressful experience being the editor of a news program for our Radio class, we went to a Christmas vegan baking class, and Lauren got food poisoning (this is unrelated to the vegan baking class!...

#44 We struggle with being trilingual (All about languages, pt. 2) 04.12.2022

We both got sick. I mean, Lauren has been sick for a very long time now (she basically skipped a whole month of pilates classes) and Kristýna couldn’t resist anymore. This being said, you might think that we didn’t do anything, which is a very wrong assumption. We did rest during the weekend (we were forced to) but during the week, we did many other things. We filmed a TikTok (as an assignment for...

#43 Books, books, and books 27.11.2022

We had a boring, but stressful and productive week. A lot of studying, exams, assignments... Basically one deadline after another. At this point we really just need the semester to end and our break to be here. But within all the stress we did have some nice moments: Lauren got to spend time with a dog (!) and Kristyna has developed a nice morning routine, since she keeps accidentally waking up su...

#42 How the heck do you make friends as an adult?? 20.11.2022

We are slowly running out of energy. We have a lot to do to school, all the assignments, exams, etc and we really need a break. But at the same time, we are trying to enjoy some nice things, such as our cooking class that we finished last week! (Well, not really..) We enjoyed thst very much. Kristýna went to get drinks with the group afterwards but Lauren went home because she is STILL sick. Oh ye...

#41 What the future holds... (Future Outlook) 13.11.2022

This weekly recap covers a lot: We threw a Taylor Swift album release party and forced all our friends to come. (Some were more excited than others...) And Lauren had a great time at the Taylor Swift club night afterwards. We had a lot (and I mean A LOT) of assignments to do and exams to prepare for. We've officially reached that point of the semester. Lauren got sick. Kristyna went to New Yor...

#40 Should I prioritise myself or sacrifice for others? 30.10.2022

This past week, we did so many amazing activities. First of all, after a really long time, we had a nice relaxing weekend, which was absolutely needed. But the highlight of it all was going to our first session of cooking classes! Our university offers a short course of vegan cooking and we’ve decided to try it out. Everybody was super super nice and the food was, of course, delicious. We also giv...

#39 Being interviewed by a friend, pt. 2 23.10.2022

We look back at a busy week: A padel tournament (they did not win!), a visit from a friend from home, a Tom Odell Concert, study sessions, a failed exam (?) and even a spa visit. There has been a lot going on and we're updating you on all of it. This episode is the second part of a friend interviewing us. Our friend prepared a bunch of questions for us to answer and games for us to play: This lead...

#38 Being interviewed by a friend, pt. 1 16.10.2022

We went to Castellon for a weekend, which was amazing but very exhausting. The initial point of the trip was to film a documentary for our university class but in the end, we did so much more. Our friend Sara (it was her hometown) took us to a very traditional event, which she tried to explain to us prior (unsuccessfully unfortunately) and according to Lauren's words, it left us even more confused...

#37 Why are we studying abroad? 09.10.2022

As always, we recap the week: These past days included a surprise visit from a friend, a not so successful study session for an economics, and drinks and food with family and friends. For this episode's main topic, we try to answer the simple (but not quite so simple) question of "why are we here?". Why did we decide to leave our hometowns, our families and our friends to study in a foreign countr...

#36 What to do a week BEFORE and AFTER you change countries (again) 02.10.2022

In the first part of this episode, we talk about everything that we’ve done the past week. And to warn you, it was a lot, sports especially. Lauren’s mom visiting, picking up the mugs we painted last week and were stoked to see how they turned out, Kristýna’s volleyball tryouts and much much more. We also updated our recording gear, we can now hear ourselves and each other through headphones so ho...

#35 What awaits us this semester? (Semester Outlook) 25.09.2022

This past week was eventful – but in the best way possible! And we talked all about it in the first part of this episode. We planned an exciting weekend trip to one of our friend's hometowns. Made the most out of a 2 for 1 burger offer. Spent a couple of hours painting mugs and drinking tea. Took some time writing. And so on and so forth. For the main part, we decided to discuss this upcoming seme...

#34 How our summer went 18.09.2022

We are back! Summer's over now (technically not, because it's still over 30 degrees in Madrid) and we returned to our second home - Madrid. We haven't honestly talked much during summer since we were so busy! But we decided to make up for it by making the first episode all about how we spent our summer, what trips we took but of course we also dig a little bit into how we feel about being back, wh...

#33 Second semester recap 26.06.2022

The second semester of our Journalism degree is officially over. We managed to pass all of our courses and have been enjoying the first weeks of summer break back in our hometowns. Lauren finally realized that in order to have plans she needs to actually make plans. So, she's been catching up with friends and enjoying being surrounded by lakes and rivers (since Madrid lacks that a bit...). Kristyn...
