Jazz Matters

I built Jazz Matters as my home for contemporary jazz, nu-jazz, and world music — and now it’s also home to a small number of guest shows and mixes from people I rate. Expect contemporary jazz, nu-jazz, and global sounds — with tracklists, long reads, interviews, and playlists that go deeper than the usual. Jazz Matters is a not-for-profit hobby project I’m extremely proud of. It began in May 2021 as a weekly radio show on a London community station, and that spirit of discovery still guides everything I do. Today it reaches 40,000+ open-minded listeners across 57 countries on 24+ platforms. I...

Jazz Matters Digs Afrika 02.05.2024

World music has a special place in my musical heart and was started by the ground breaking UK group Osibisa in the early 70s with the single music for a Gong Gong, where they created a new genre of music that originated from the early 20th century, Highlife music that is characterised by jazzy horns, multiple guitars and an up-tempo, synth-driven sound. Then came along the song that launched Osibi...

Periodically, I release an assortment of music I've dubbed "Forgotten Treasures." This ongoing project sprang to life amidst the digitization of my music collection.  Looking back at 2023 at the music that went under my radar, or I should have played and that I have played. TRIVIAL - Mestizo Sounds 05.11.2023

Trivial is my new monthly mix for NDFM - November 2023. Music cannot change the world, so they say. Sure, it can alter our way of thinking and, thus, it may improve our human existence. With a little help from my friends, I have used quotes of wisdom by celebrated writers, poets, scientists and musicians interluding with music. Something trivial means ordinary, superficial and not relevant. Our o...

Balance is Thinkin’ About Trilok Gutu 04.11.2023

I first discovered Trilok Gurtu's music around 25 to 30 years ago when it was playing in a record store. It was like my soul instantly connected with his music, and I've been following his work ever since. About a decade later, I had the incredible opportunity to back up Trilok in a performance. Let me tell you, he left me completely awestruck. During the sound check, he did something mind-blowing...
