There are preachers out there who preach doctrines and positions about which, they say to the congregation, you can be certain. This morning, I am only certain about a handful of things, and I am certain that certainty is getting us into a great deal of trouble.

You and I, we are living in the borderlands, maybe not so much geographical borders or national borders, but cultural borders and temporal borders, and look around generational borders. You and I as the people, as fellow inhabitants of this most fragile earth as individuals, and especially today, especially today.

Jesus' natural inclination is to move toward us. And in those times of fear and uncertainty where we might be governed by distrust and suspicion and we pull away, Jesus is always moving toward us, reaching out that hand of his to say, I am here.
